"Unbeknownst to me, and having started at the wrong end of Appledore's esplanade, I found myself at the front door next to the 'cottage' I had stayed in with my son a few years ago !Forget 'fisherman's cottage' and think Homes and Gardens. Upon opening the door you will look into a world of elegant tones, wonderful views and everything you might need to make your stay enjoyable. Having the river, in high tide, lapping against your holiday home is sheer bliss . Blessed as I was with sunny days and just the call of the birds breaking a relaxing silence, I could not have wished for more. When the tide drops, spits of river bed are exposed and the sea birds, waders and egrets come in to rest bathe and feed upon what might have been exposed or left by the fleeing tide. I had the best amount of birds to watch and had to buy new binoculars as I had left mine at home !My greatest joy was to hear and then see Curlew, that I had recently read, have been placed on the 'RED LIST', it is tragic that we continue to lose species.I find Appledore the most soporific place and the people so friendly. A first morning trip to the newsagents, tucked away in a back street, and I am greeted by a lovely lady who recognises me, and we start were we left off, Mrs A had her hip done, working news about the shipyard ( famous and from the 1800's. has announced it will close, due to lack of orders. A severe blow ) yes, the winter was ok, have you come down for the Literary Festival, Mrs B's shop is closing and there is still a queue up the street when the Fish and Chip shop is open.Bidefords is very close with a branch of the excellent Morrisons and Barnstable is 15 to 20 mins away. All in all, one of those holiday stays when you do not want to come home and the thoughts of could I make the move will rove around in your head whilst you stay. And finally, I was to be seen lying on the pavement in front of Estate Agents window, sobbing, having just seen the prices and the properties available !I must add my thanks to the owners for such a lovely welcome hamper and a delicious bottle of wine. I toasted them with my thanks and good health."

"It's been a few weeks since we spent our Easter holiday at S18995, and I've been meaning to find the time to write a few words about our experience. The cottage was a great base to explore the area. We live in Hull, so Devon and Cornwall are quite a long drive away. We easily visited places of interest local to the cottage and farther afield. For all intents and purposes the cottage is a new build within an existing barn structure, which is great. Everything being like a new home, but with the charm of an old building. That said the barn has been converted to a very high standard, and being from a construction background, I spent a lot of time admiring the quality of the joinery. The cottage had everything we could possibly need, and the welcome pack left by the owners was a very nice touch.Whilst the cottage is in a very rural landscape, within ten minutes you're in the centre of Bideford with all the shops and facilities you could possibly need. All in all we had a great time, and we would highly recommend a holiday there."

"We have stayed at S44852 many, many times and keep returning. It is a magical place which offers a real opportunity to switch off and enjoy peace and quiet in seclusion - whilst being in a location that makes all the local attractions and coastline easy to reach. We are not lovers of returning to the same place but have made an exception over the years with S44852 because we have yet to find anything better for just 2 adults and a dog with good access to the North Cornish coast. Yes, it is small but as the description says it is a converted Shippen! It has everything you need and is more than comfortable for a great holiday. Contrary to previous reviews there is really nothing wrong with either access or parking. Yes, it is down a tiny access lane but it is Cornwall and the real beauty of S44852 is its location in what is a tiny hamlet. We will be there without fail in 2018."

"Fantastic views and living area very good but equipment lacked some basics like sharp knives in kitchen and small bin bags. We also had to defrost the freezer compartment of the frig so that the door would shut properly. Sleeping accommodation a bit cramped on first floor and stairs very steep and not suitable for older people. Bathroom a disaster - extremely small and bath too high from the floor so that stepping out is dangerous. A larger person would not be able to sit on the loo as the space is too small. Towel rail wouldn't heat and despite opening the window and leaving the extractor on everything got very damp.No car parking space other than overnight in the street where someone took the front off the car on the first night.I should think that it would be very cramped for 6 people - we were 2 plus a temporary visitor and that was enough."

"This was a lovely property, perfect for an out of season escape. Right on the Tarka trail you had unlimited walking and cycling right on your doorstep. It is large and detached and perfect for two people who want peace and quiet, with a bit of home comfort. I appreciated the hairdryer as I forgot my own. It’s a short walk to Bideford along the trail and the beautiful beach at Westward Ho! just 15 minutes drive. My only niggle was that the kitchen equipment was sparse and poor quality as is often the case with rental properties. If you want a fire the night you arrive bring your own kindling as they only provided three chunky logs and a couple of fire lighters which wasn’t enough to get the fire going. Also if you have fire gauntlets I’d bring them as I really missed mine! All in all a super break, with amazing weather in October."
