The slate mines have now been designated as a unesco World Heritage Site, and visitors may take fascinating underground tours to experience mining as it was done in the past. The famed narrow gauge Ffestiniog mountain railway also travels through the Snowdonia National Park for 13 miles to Porthmadog, the harbour town.
