Very convenient for local provisions, food, drinks and walks. Also useful parking permit (thanks for sorting out so quickly for us) and all communications were friendly, helpful and timely. Thanks so much, we really enjoyed our stay which was much enhanced by the sun and the beautifully green and blooming time of year.

The property itself felt fresh, clean and airy. It had everything we needed and the owner was brilliant with communication. The location was wonderful and meant it was so easy to pop out and buy food for the day from all the local shops. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property.

The owner agreed to turn the heating on but the heating system kept switching off a short period after. b) The heating had not been on for weeks prior to our stay and with the recent colder spell, the house structure was cold. The heating system should have been on a day or two prior to our arrival to warm the house through c) We went to bed fully clothed with jumpers to keep us warm on our first night d) We were unable to use the front sitting room for first two days due to the cold. It only became useable in the evening with an additional fan heater running. e) The unheated kitchen relies on heat in the dining room to warm f) The heating was left on only after I raised the matter on a number of occasions with the owner and Sykes Cottages on days one and two. g) We woke up to a cold house again on Monday morning with the heating set to 13°C. The heating schedule for remainder of our stay had been set to background heat only i.e. to prevent the pipes freezing. On this occasion, I changed the heating schedule settings to keep the holiday cottage warmer i.e. to be at a lower temperature between midnight and 7.00 am. At 7.00 am I set the heating schedule to 21°C. The heating would take about 3-4 hours to reach 21°C. h) We discovered mid-day on Wednesday that the heating had been switched off for the remainder of our stay. The reason given was that the owners had assumed we had departed the property. Our booking finished at Thursday lunchtime – no one could provide a rationale to support the assumption that we vacated the holiday let. i) “The Energy Saving Trust recommends heating your home to between 18 to 21 degrees Celsius during winter.” By having heating on all the time and turning up the temperature, I managed to get the temperature to be at 19°C - 21°C during the day j) I gave up contacting Sykes Cottages and the owner (after about 15 occasions) because despite my complaints about the house being cold, nothing improved and it became a pointless exercise. Much of information given during these exchanges was false e.g: i) “The heating will be turned up really high as it will heat the property quicker” (the boiler does not function like this) ii) “Heating is off because you have turned it off” (I was told this on day one. I had not touched the heating controls. The reason it had turned off was because the heating schedule programme was set to be at 13°C) iii) “Heating is off because the previous customer reset the heating schedule programme to be off during the day” iv) “The heating system needs to be paused (I assumed turned off) every day for an hour” v) “Heating is off because heating schedule software keeps re-setting itself” vi) “Heating is off because we assumed you had left and gone home and therefore turned it off” (see h) above) vii) “Heating is often showing 23°C and sometimes gets up to over 26°C.” At no time did the heating system go above 21°C, most of the time we were doing well if it reached 20°C. See i) above We decided to put up with the conditions rather than return home ending our Christmas break during which we had arranged to visit elderly relatives in the area. I requested on a number of occasions additional heaters i.e. oil filled radiators, but this request was declined. The one supplied fan heater was noisy and unsuitable to be left when we went out or to bed. My view is that the heating boiler is either too small for the property because it takes hours to increase the temperature, or the system has not been set up correctly. In addition, the owners are continually turning down the heating to 13°C for an occupied rental property. One can only assume to reduce the gas bill. Our Christmas break was spoilt because of the heating issues and concerns that when we woke in the morning or went out the heating would be turned off again I suggest that the property owners are not suitable to rent out holiday cottages because they have no concerns that their customers can enjoy an acceptable level of warmth. It seems that their main priority is to minimise their gas bill. It felt as if we were in a constant battle with the owners to maintain a reasonable temperature in the holiday let. Example of heating schedule set by owners: 00.00 – 07.00: 13.5°C 07.30 – 08.00: 19°C 08.00 – 18.00: 14°C 12.00 – 12.30: 18°C 12.30 – 17.30: 19°C 17.30 – 21.00: 14°C 21.00 – 21.30: 19°C 21.30 – 24.00: 13.5°C Observations: i) These were temperature setting for one of days we rented the property ii) Most days were identical or similar iii) Temperature was only set to be above 14°C for 6.5 hours per day iv) It would take the heating system about three hours to reach 19°C from 14°C, so most of the time it never reached those temperatures because it was only on for 30 mins or one hour
