What our customers say about their holidays

It’s a wonderful world at Heatherbrae - we had the most brilliant time for my daughter’s hen weekend ‘Hens at Heatherbrae’.

We were a group of family and friends with ages ranging from under 1 year old to 70 years old and the facilities were perfect for everyone. Bedding and towels were top quality which I think always makes a difference. The spacious kitchen meant everyone could help with preparing meals without getting in anyone’s way. The house was large enough for everyone to find their own space when needed but also big enough for us all to come together for food, games etc. We had beautiful weather all weekend which meant we were able to have afternoon tea in the gorgeous gardens with enough tables for our large party. It felt like an Italian holiday surrounded by family with good food, wine and sunshine. The hot tubs went down well with all ages and became a focal point for enjoying a good natter. We had games in the garden, played tennis, the kids loved the swing (I think it competed with the hot tub for their favourite place) and were lucky enough to enjoy both the outside and inside of Heatherbrae. Some of our party enjoyed the local walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside and others popped down into the village to have a wander around local shops. Even if the weather had been bad there was easily enough space inside to have had a great time too with lots of books and DVD’s and a games room, large living room and spacious kitchen with two enormous tables so everyone could eat together. The only issue we had was a dripping tap in the kitchen which was fixed during our stay by the helpful maintenance man whose prompt attention showed that even this small issue was important to the owners. I can’t recommend Heatherbrae highly enough whether you are planning a family getaway, a group of friends or even a small wedding or special birthday celebration. It really was a wonderful world for our special weekend and happy memories will live long in our minds.

      We’ve had a horrible stay.

On arrival we were very surprised by the outside and location of it as it’s not as advertised. The photo is showing a rear door which isn’t used as a door at all making out like that’s the entrance in the photos. On entering the property we could see straight away that the house hadn’t been cleaned to a reasonable standard, toilets, bathroom floors and bins were filthy with mud all over, bedrooms and living room were thick of dust and muck even causing us to sneeze all the time and one of our party had an asthma attack! We had to go and buy cleaning products and take the time to clean. Carpets marked and dirty to the point where we wouldn’t let anything on the ground, walls full of dirty marks. No sweeping brush or vacuum. The cellar which is advertised as a games room is what I can only call a hazard with the stairs and smell of damp and not very nice down there at all. Outside there is no area for children and dogs which is a huge surprise when you’re welcome to take 3 dogs and it said in the description there was a patio area. There is a large bench blocking the front door which is just an eyesore and filthy and took up so much room. There was a stuffed crow which was hideous and not in the pictures along with a huge stuffed fish in a glass cabinet on the living room wall! Not a great use of the space at all, the layout of the kitchen was so tight and not being able to eat together or even facing one another was far from what we expected. pictures did not give an accurate expectation of the limited space. The place is not at all suitable for 8 people and 3 dogs. We couldn’t wait to leave!!

We stayed at Heatherbrae for a family get together over the bank holiday weekend.

There were 21 people, aged 2 – 80! This is a lovely house, with plenty of space and big rooms for socialising, comfortable seating in the lounge, an enormous kitchen. The house clean, tidy and overall, well maintained. Warm and cosy, we lit the open fire in the lounge in the evenings. The games room with pool table was a hit! A great location, with fantastic views. Our group followed some of the local walking trails and also ventured to Middleton in Teasdale, Barnard Castle and Beamish. The outside space is fantastic, big secure grounds; the remote controls for the gates are really useful. We used the tennis courts and also the hot tub at the front of the property; we took our own towels for this. We had good weather and some guests sat outside in the evening with the chimenea lit. We catered for ourselves. There was loads of hot water, we made use of the wine fridges, kitchen equipment and dishwashers. All worked well and were in good condition. There was plenty of pots, pans, utensils and crockery. There wasn’t an ice machine as stated in the details, but we sourced some ice locally. Bedrooms were well presented with good quality bedding & towels. A couple the blinds in the annex did not work properly and the 3rd floor ensuite room needs a bit of a refresh but these are small niggles and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the facilities at Heatherbrae. We would definitely come back! Edit Since writing our review the owner quickly responded to our feedback and has updated me.

I was thoroughly disappointed with my stay at the property, which has clearly seen better days.

Rather than feeling like a welcoming holiday home, it resembled a tired, neglected hotel. The pre-arrival information was overly detailed to the point of being overwhelming, creating an unwelcoming atmosphere before we had even arrived. Upon arrival, we were further let down by the lack of a welcome pack, and the bathrooms were missing basic essentials like shower gel—an oversight that should never happen. One of the hot tubs was out of order, which was disappointing for everyone, and the oven was broken, completely ruining our plans for a pre-arranged family Sunday lunch. The owner, unfortunately, was full of excuses for these issues, but had not informed us before the stay nor offered any solutions while we were there. In addition to these frustrations, there were various health and safety hazards. A disabled hearth in the kitchen was still poorly positioned, causing several guests to cut their shins on it. This was a serious hazard that should have been properly addressed. Overall, the property was a significant letdown—far from how it was described, and it lacked any sense of care or attention. It certainly did not provide value for money, and the overall experience left us feeling deeply disappointed.

We had an amazing stay at Heather Brae with my family and friends for my 40th birthday.

If you’re looking for somewhere for a large get together then look no further. The house is bigger than it looks on the photos, the kitchen has plenty of room and space for 20+ people to sit down to eat and socialise together. The various reception rooms also allow for the group to spread out and keep all ages entertained. The grounds and the views are stunning. The kids (and the big kids) loved the tree house, rope swing, tennis court, football pitch and hot tubs. The pictures simply can’t do a place like this justice, it has to be seen to be believed. The bedrooms are all well appointed with a mixture of old a new. The beds, linen and towels are of the highest quality, and the whole place was spotlessly clean. The house has everything you could possibly need, including top of the range coffee machine, drinks fridges, ice machine, pool table, games and log fires. Julian as host was very responsive and helpful throughout our stay. We made some amazing memories and will be sure to return for family gatherings in the future.
