Situated in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty', this is a well-served little settlement and offers a good range of shops, pubs and places to eat. For more specialist amenities, the market town of Barnard Castle is within easy driving distance and provides everything a visitor could possibly need. The surrounding countryside is full of excellent walking opportunities through high, open moorland and pretty wooded valleys. Nearby are the waterfalls of High Force and Cauldron Snout, which are often considered to be amongst the most spectacular sights in the district.

Beautiful village and surrounding country side. Lots of interesting things to do nearby. Bishop Auckland Palace was wonderful. Rather ugly slidy leather chairs and sofa and a depressing grey bathroom otherwise very well equipped.

So warm we did not need to light the open fire, even when we had a frost. Every thing was catered for. Could not fault it. Plenty of food shops and eateries in the village. This is our second visit and we hope to visit again. The chippy is a must.

The location was great, close by the cafés and shops. It also was an excellent base to explore the area. We are hoping to come back again as the cottage really felt like a home away from home.
