The budding historians in your party can pay a visit to the nearby National Trust site of Castle Drogo, featuring expansive grounds, a croquet lawn and an on-site café. The attractive town of Okehampton is your next stop, home to its own showground and a Norman Castle. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do with cycling, fishing and golfing opportunities available, or if that isn’t your thing, peruse the independent shops, wander through the exhibits of the Museum of Dartmoor or venture to one of many National Trust properties nearby, including Finch Foundry and Lydford Gorge. For a taste of city life, make the drive over to Exeter, where you will find an impressive cathedral, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery and the Riverside Valley Park. Dartmoor National Park in Devon has a lovely village at its northernmost tip. Chagford, one of Dartmoor's five Stannary towns, is a little town with a lot of services and things to do. There are a variety of shops as well as four bars in the area. More active facilities, such as a public tennis court and an open-air swimming pool, are available in Chagford. The Three Crowns Hotel, which dates back to the 1200s, is located in this historic town. Chagford is noted for its culture, hosting film, literary, and music festivals as well as the Two Hills Race, an annual running race. Exeter, a vibrant, lovely city just over 21 miles away, offers a different kind of getaway and is well worth a visit. Okehampton, a quaint and attractive town, is about 12 miles distant.

We originally wanted a cottage with a real fire but we both loved the real like electric fire and decided it was better without the hassle of making it up after long walks bagging tors. The kitchen was more than fully equipped and everything was very good quality as the owners have a real detail for providing the best. The garden was lovely with the seating area but too cold for us to use but be lovely in the summer. Big spacious bedrooms with large king size beds and one en suite and even though we were almost on the Main Street it was very quiet. We loved the location being in the centre of Chagford with a good selection of artisan shops and being opposite Blacks the most amazing deli where we bought soups and cakes for our walks and three really lovely food pubs - The Three Crowns, The Globe and our favourite The Chagford Inn. We also recommend breakfast in The Old Forge Cafe. Thereâs an excellent wine shop selling local beer and cider and a bakery, greengrocers and butchers. We particularly loved the bell ringing on Tuesday evening for 90 minutes. We also managed to park on the street for free. We notice from the visitors book that many people stay for a second time and we can see why! Thank you to our hosts for making such a wonderful holiday stay
