Guests say

Curlew Cottage in Totnes offers a charming stay with scenic views and convenient access to local attractions. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, dog-friendly touches, and the added bonus of a pool and spa. While some maintenance and additional kitchen supplies would enhance the experience, the property's relaxing atmosphere and family-friendly environment are highlights.

Guests have reported issues with cleanliness, including mould in bathrooms, dirty outdoor furniture, and a lack of deep cleaning. However, kitchen utensils appeared new and the log burner added a cosy touch.

The location is highly praised for its stunning scenic views, proximity to a golf course, and nearby family-friendly activities. It serves as a great base for exploring surrounding areas.

The cottage's beds are described as lovely and comfortable, and the property provides a cosy environment with a log burner. However, some guests noted issues with mattresses and suggested the addition of more towels.

Facilities like the pool and spa are well-received, but guests have noted that the cottage could benefit from better maintenance, such as fixing a faulty toilet cistern and providing clearer instructions for heating and appliances.

While guests appreciated dog-friendly amenities like beds and bowls, there is no mention of gifts in the reviews. Therefore, it cannot be confirmed if thoughtful gestures such as gifts are a consistent offering.

We have stayed in Curlew three times now. Being on the golf course and close to the best Western Hotel is a definite plus, as is being close to Woodlands Park which my grandchildren love.We love being on the site but we have put up with the condition of Curlew for too long. It desperately needs to be refurbished. It’s down on it heals and feels like it from the moment you walk in! We were disappointed to find it wasn’t as clean as it should have been, several light bulbs needed replacing and the quilt on the top floor bed was torn and badly stained. Not ‘luxury’ by any stretch of the imagination. On the safety (and compliance) side, there was an empty fire blanket container in the kitchen and no blanket. I pointed it out to a staff member who came to read the meters. He wasn’t overly concerned, just said ‘the guy is round next week’! On our last day, we had to step over dog poo deposited on the path between the lodges by some inconsiderate owner. There are no pick-up or dogs on leads signs anywhere. Very disappointing!

Hi just a few things, the bathroom on the 1st floor had huge cracks and it looked mouldy. The bathroom on the top floor was not great, toilet at the back was filthy and the plug in the sink was full of hair, so the water took a while to go down. When we arrived the outdoor chairs were full of cobwebs and the table was filthy. The bbq was so rusty it wasn’t fit for purpose.

We recently stayed here and overall, it was a lovely experience with a few areas that could use some attention. The location is absolutely beautiful — stunning scenic views, and we were literally right on the golf course. This was perfect for my husband and father-in-law, who were able to play golf several times during our stay. Our children loved the swimming pool. Even though they only used it twice, it was plenty of fun for them. I also had a wonderful treatment at the spa; however, they were short-staffed, which meant appointments were very limited. I was only able to get in once during the entire week, which was a bit disappointing as I was hoping for a few more treatments. The location is very convenient for exploring the surrounding areas. Dartmouth is close by, as well as some beautiful coves, beaches, a zoo, and farms, making it a great spot for family-friendly activities. There’s also a large Woodlands park right next to the hotel, though we didn’t visit because our children are more interested in animals. The cottage itself was charming and well-equipped, but there were a few drawbacks. While the property is dog-friendly, you are required to keep dogs on a leash at all times. The designated dog walk area is very small, which doesn’t allow dogs to run and release their energy. It would be fantastic if there was a secure, off-leash area for dogs on the premises. We did find a great walk at Little Dartmouth (Jubilee Queen Walk), where dogs can roam freely, but this option requires a short drive. The cottage’s back garden has potential but isn’t secure for pets. There’s a stone wall and some shrubbery acting as a barrier, but our dog managed to escape twice. A simple addition of chicken wire could easily solve this issue and allow dogs to enjoy the garden safely.Regarding the cottage interiors, they were cozy but could benefit from some maintenance and deep cleaning. The upstairs bathroom had extremely low water pressure — barely enough to take a proper shower — and the cleanliness felt more like surface-level tidying rather than a thorough scrub. Soap residue and grime were still visible. The outdoor furniture and barbecue were rusted and unusable, which was disappointing as we had planned a barbecue during our stay. These are small fixes (like replacing a £20 grill top or treating rusty furniture) that would make a big difference. In the kitchen, the cottage had all the necessary appliances, including a dishwasher, but there were just six of everything (plates, cups, cutlery). This meant we had to wash items after every meal rather than being able to fill the dishwasher for a daily cycle. It would be helpful to have a few extra sets of cutlery and some basic pantry items like salt, pepper, and sugar, but that’s a personal preference. The cottage did have some nice dog-friendly touches, like a bed and bowls provided, which we appreciated. The beds were generally very comfortable, though my son’s mattress had a hole on one side, so we had to flip it over. Some cosmetic maintenance is needed throughout — things like paint touch-ups after leaks and replacing worn-out fixtures and furnishings.Despite these issues, we had a fantastic time. The surroundings are beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxing, and it’s a great base for families with kids and dogs. With a bit more attention to maintenance and some small improvements, this place could easily be top-rated. I would still recommend it, but with the caveat that there are areas where it could be better.
