While you stay at 18 Southtown, why not visit Dartmouth Castle, a 14th century fortress overlooking the entrance to the Dart estuary. It has a 15th century gun tower, the first purpose-built coastal artillery fort in Briton. It is a stunning piece of architecture which has stood guard over the harbour protecting the town from invaders for over 600 years. A large iron chain used to stretch across the entrance to the harbour from here to Gommerock Castle on the Kingswear side to prevent any invaders sailing up the river. In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from nearby Bayards Cove. Dartmouth also played a part in the civil war and remains of fortifications from this period can still be seen at Gallants Bower above the castle.

Dartmouth is a town and civil parish in Devon, England.
