Quietly tucked away in the village of Barton Turf, Broad Cottage stands detached in a sunny, south-facing position with a spectacular view over pasture and woodlands. The cottage is within 200 yards of Barton Turf Staithe which provides access to Barton Broad. This broad is a nature reserve, owned and managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It is one of the few spots in the country where bitterns (which were nearly extinct two decades ago) are nesting. There are also otters, marsh harriers, kingfishers, terns, cormorants and many duck species.
The Barton Broad Boardwalk, 2 miles across the broad, has boardwalk trails through swamps and woodland which lead to a panoramic view over the broad. The broad also provides opportunities for sailing, kayaking and canoeing. You can launch small boats and canoes at the staithe. Motor boats and canoes can be hired at Wayford Bridge, 2¾ miles, where you can explore the upper reaches of the River Ant and the old North Walsham and Dilham canal where the water is beautifully clear. Sailing boats or motor boats can also be hired for day trips at many of the local boatyards. Walking and cycling are available locally. There are many public footpaths for walkers, some of which start in the village. The area is flat and the minor roads have little traffic.
The neighbouring village of Neatishead, 1½ miles, has a lovely country pub serving food, and a village community shop. The pretty village of Horning is just over 4 miles away with riverside cafés, pubs, a selection of shops and a riverboat. Wroxham, which is known as the ‘Capital of the Broads’, is 6 miles and here you can hire boats and explore the waterways, with their riverside cafés and restaurants, or browse a selection of shops or the supermarket. It also has a train station for visiting Cromer on the coast or Norwich. Wroxham is also a starting point for the Bure Valley Steam Railway, which provides a nostalgic steam trip on Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge railway. It runs through the pretty countryside and follows the meandering River Bure through meadowland and ancient pasture. Along the line there are wayside halts serving Brampton, Buxton and Coltishall, where you can hop off/on and explore by foot.
For a trip to the coast, the sandy beaches of the Norfolk’s coast are just a 20-minute drive away. Eccles Beach is 7½ miles, Happisburgh is 9 miles, and Mundesley is 13 miles. The popular seaside resort of Cromer is 17 miles with its pier, promenade, theatre, beach, shops and restaurants.
Popular attractions within easy driving distance include Bewilderwood, an outdoor adventure park with zip wires and jungle walks, Fairhaven Water Gardens, Wroxham Barns, the RAF Museum and How Hill Nature Reserve. There are many National Trust properties in the region which are well worth visiting, or alternatively, you can spend a day in the fine city of Norwich, 14 miles, with its castle, cathedrals, museums, theatres and excellent array of shops and cafés. Beach 7½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

"Lovely cottage, home to the owners when they are in the UK and that’s reflected in the detail. Very peaceful."

"A very nice cottage for a relaxing break but there's nothing in the small village other than residents so a car is a must if you are planning to go any where. Lovely garden although would have been better if properly fenced as we had a dog and could not let him roam around by himself as he could get through fence. Also a hedge row in the garden gives off some really sharpe spikes which a few of us ended up standing on which was quite painful so bit of a warning to any one with young children. There was a parasol in shed which would have been useful but was locked away. The cottage it's self was cosy but a few issues with cleanliness especially kitchen items. There was also a book to fill in about items in property requiring some attention but unfortunately the same things were reported over and over again but nothing seemed to be done about them. Having said all this we still had an enjoyable stay. Not sure it would be a place I would say I would love to return too but enjoyed the time we spent there."

"We loved Broad Cottage. It is pleasantly comfortable without being too pristine that you are frightened of spoiling anything. It is our first experience of hiring a rental cottage so we have nothing to compare it with, but overall we thought it good value and a very pleasant setting with a secluded garden. Apart from the usual birds in the garden we also had a pheasant and a family of muntjac deer visit."

"The photos online don't do this cottage justice. It was truly amazing and a lovely location."

"We had a very pleasant weekend in this well presented cottage."
