About this property

Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the whole of England, this fabulous, semi-detached cottage is attached to the owner's home on their traditional hill farm in the tiny hamlet of Stonethwaite, near to Rosthwaite in the beautiful Lake District. With the views forever changing, this spectacular location, ideal for a family holiday, will weave its magic into your heart and leave you yearning to get back to this truly special cottage. On the ground floor of this lovely cottage are a fitted kitchen, a dining room and a cosy sitting room with an open fire, where you can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink. There are also four comfortable bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room, and a family bathroom. At the rear of the cottage is a garden area where you can sit and relax, whilst at the front you can watch the farmer busy at work in the farmyard, no doubt accompanied by his faithful sheepdogs. Just around the corner is an excellent country inn serving delicious food and a little further away, in the charming village of Rosthwaite, is a shop, tea room and pub. Being located in the shadows of England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike, and on the routes of the Coast to Coast path and the Cumbrian Way, this cottage is ideally placed to explore this enchanting landscape. A regular bus service also runs from Stonethwaite taking you further afield to Langdale, Thirlmere, Lorton and into Keswick, or explore the area by car stopping at the many places of interest. Honister Pass is also on the doorstep and for a truly unforgettable day why not explore the slate mines or climb the sheer cliff face at Via Ferrata? With so much to do in the area, this delightful cottage is perfect for families or friends at any time of the year.

The popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the north of the Lake District and has plenty to offer the visitor at any time of year. The town boasts numerous shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, excellent parks, the famous Theatre by the Lake, a charming cinema, the Pencil Museum, a climbing wall, fishing and great mountain biking opportunities, whilst the beautiful lake of Derwentwater at the head of the stunning Borrowdale Valley is only a few minutes’ walk from the town centre.

It was the perfect size for our large family (four teenage children). My main caution is that the beds are not comfortable, springs in mattresses very noticeable, pillows very thin. Also the lack of drying room means central heating becomes critical but it rarely comes on and only at odd times of the day (no means of adjusting it) so our gear stayed damp! That said, you'll be hard pressed to find a better place to explore the fells.

The cottage is cosy yet spacious and easily accommodated six adults. The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were comfy the whole cottage was tastefully decorated and had pictures of the local area throughout. The location of the cottage is right in the heart of the mountains so perfect for a day out hiking and then back to a cosy warm cottage and open fire or if you like you can pop to the pub next door for a scrumptious meal and drink. The owners were lovely and friendly and they left for us a couple of bottles of wine. It was lambing time too so we were able to enjoy peeking into the barns to see the newborns. Stonethwaite is a lovely setting surrounded by fantastic views and character properties and plenty of visiting birds to the garden to watch. For me a perfect place in an idyllic location!

). Car parking is adequate for two cars, which requires you to either reverse in or reverse out, but we had no issues with this - and useful as the car parking in the village is often full. The cottage itself is homely, with plenty of space for 7 people, with a lovely and very secluded cottage garden which was nice to sit and read in. The kitchen was adequate but not large and it was nice having a separate dining room. The wifi was good where it was available in the house - one of the bedrooms mainly - and there was a very good tv with freesat. The owner was very friendly and checked we were OK. The dogs barked on occasion but were not a nuisance at all and seemed friendly. All in all we had a brilliant week.
