The perfect hideaway, Mill Cottage occupies an elevated position that one cannot drive to. A steep, narrow footpath, approximately 240 yards, leads to the cottage. Once at the cottage, the peaceful location offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Set within 1 acre of gardens, the views that can be enjoyed are spectacular. This semi-detached, period cottage was once a cider mill, and a donkey was used to transport the produce up and down the hill. The original cider press still has pride of place at the cottage.
The gardens are a particular feature of the property, and positioned at one side of the front garden is an area of suspended timber decking with a delightful summerhouse/unstocked bar, and has views across the tree lined valley. The greater area of land however extends rearwards from this area of garden, and comprises of a steeply sloping grassy bank with a wide variety of trees, species including walnut, a large old cider apple and a number of younger apple trees, together with hazel and others. Here, there is a pergola and further seating area, so the sunshine can be enjoyed all day long. Guests are welcome to pick the garden produce, which includes wild garlic, apples, plums, pears, gooseberries, blackcurrants, whitecurrants, strawberries and blackberries. This characterful holiday cottage has the additional benefit of a balcony room off the master bedroom.

"Had a lovely time at Mill Cottage."

"The most fantastic cottage , we had a weekend away amongst this covid time, the place was really clean, you felt relaxed that all precautions was made, very comfortable place , in all areas, lovely surroundings, the views are fab, outdoor seating areas are great if you have the weather, i cannot fault it other than the steep climb to the property , but we knew that before we booked, and one other thing the water to bath is a bit slow in filling but that wasn't a problem really . all in all fantastic place .Just be aware of the steep climb, but worth it."

"We really enjoyed our stay at Mill Cottage. It was a great retreat; the garden was lovely and the cottage beautiful. It was also fantastically cool during the heatwave. The climb up in 34 degrees with all our luggage was a little challenging but well worth it. There are lots of lovely dog walks a short drive away in the Forest of Dean. The local people were really friendly and the nearby shop well stocked."

"Mill Cottage was lovely. Off the beaten track so really peaceful. Relaxing just sitting in the garden with nature all around. Facilities were spot on. The path to the cottage is a little steep but you get used to it. Excellent base to explore the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean"

"This is a beautiful, peaceful cottage with delightful views overlooking the Lydbrook valley. The wonderful garden and extensive grounds are well equipped for eating al fresco or sitting with coffee and a good book. Inside the cottage is charming, with a sense of history combined with modern comforts. It's very clean and well kept, and everything seems to have been thought of, including an easy to use kitchen (with a huge cooker!). The bedrooms are very comfortable, and the quiet environs guarantee a good night's sleep. The cottage owners had taken great care post-lockdown and we felt confident about the hygeine measures they had in place. The walk to and from the car park does require some energy, but we didn't mind it at all. The location is great for walking, with public footpaths very close by, and the river is just a short walk/drive away. Canoe hire is a great way to spend a day, and nearby Goodrich Castle and Symonds Yat are well worth a visit. In Lydbrook there's a convenience store and fish & chip shop. All in all, highly recommended for a quiet breakaway in beautiful countryside."

"A really lovely cottage, where we stayed for just 3 nights over the new year period. Because of this we didn't get to experience the benefits of sitting outside and enjoying the garden and views but these would all be lovely in the spring/summer, so we're tempted to come again then. The owners were also really helpful and responsive. The only reason I have given it a 6 for location, is that you do have to walk up a steep path (bit muddy in places) to get to it, which needs to be remembered when arriving with all your luggage/food etc. We knew to expect it but it was still quite hard work - definitely worth it though!"

"Very interesting little place off the beaten track. Sit by the fire and relax."
    Amy ‐ 25 Oct 2019
"Great base location for day trips. Fantastic local shop. Outside dining area was used every evening. Top specification fixtures and fittings. Spacious accommodation. Property holds a position above the village which gives you seclusion without being isolated."
    Sheila ‐ 20 Oct 2019
"Lovely spacious home. Only negative is the long narrow uneven and steep track/path you have to trek along to get to it. Keeps you fit!"
    Claire ‐ 16 Sep 2019
"Mill Cottage is a beautifully decorated cottage that the photos don’t do justice to. The kitchen is very well equipped and the super king size bed is extremely comfortable. The owners are attentive/responsive without being in your face. The only negative I could say was that as part of the cottage is underground it did have a faint damp smell in part of the cottage. The grounds are also lovely and we would definitely like to return in the Spring time. As mentioned in the details there is quite a hike up a narrow path which highlights ones fitness or lack of, but the cottage at the end is worth it.The cottage is well placed for some beautiful walks, some on the door step others only a short drive away. Highly recommend."

"Nice cottage but nothing to do in the area very cold in the cottage. every thing you need in the cottage. water pressure very low took 45 minutes to run a bath. it's a treck up and down the hill with you stuff wouldnt like to do it in the winter"
    Clive ‐ 11 Aug 2019
"After feeling worried about the trek up the hill to Mill Cottage due to the reviews, I managed to do it three times in a row while carrying several bags and I'm far from being a particularly fit person, so please don't let that put you off staying here. A cup of tea soon revived me... The cottage is lovely, and was pleasantly cool in the summer heat due to being partly cut into the hillside. The two bedrooms had large, comfortable beds, and the master bedroom was a very generous size. The views from the elevated position were great, and we enjoyed watching the alpacas through the telescope. Our daughter loved the spa bath, and the star-effect lighting in the bathroom. She even found two slow worms in the garden which were fascinating."

"Brilliant views very relaxing clean and well equipped"
    Hannah ‐ 10 Jun 2019
"We had a wonderful time at the cottage. The walk from the road was an adventure every day (not fo the feint of heart) and the landscape breathtaking. The little games room was fab, the bathroom delightful ( spa bath!) and it was blissfully quiet. 5 mins drive from the Wye and Goodrich castle. There were some bits of kitchen equipment that if you're staying with a family would have been helpful (salad bowl, steak knives, somewhere for food storage), and the coffee machine took a little while to get the hang of. However, minor points. We would go back in a heart beat!"

"had a great stay, the only thing is the long walk up to the cottage but they do mention this but is worth it ,the only thing is it takes about 45 mins or more to carry the stuff up, would nt fancy it if it was raining, and make sure you make time to carry the stuff back down at the end of the week. The cottage is well equipped , loved the cottage with a lovely kitchen diner and a really lovelly little library area were you can play a game, listen to music from the one of many dvds supplied. Great bathroom with a spa,and great main bedroom with great views and viewing area of the bedroom. Great garden for either exploring or just sitting and relaxing. Also loved the touch of a small bar in the garden, disappointed the lights didn't work though ,the heating in the house can be a bit confusing to put on may be instructions could be put somewhere, overall had a great stay"
    Deborah ‐ 20 May 2019
"The cottage itself was beautiful, very quirky. The gardens promised, seating areas, pond etc was a little disappointing, quite unkept and unfortunately had to spend a bit of time picking up doggie deposits that had been left around. We were fully aware of the walk up to the cottage, bearing in mind we are pretty fit and active (ran the Tewkesbury half marathon whilst staying there) we thought it would be ok......however it was extremely steep, patches of uneven ground and very narrow. One day of rain and walking up and down with the dogs was awful. Would be very difficult for a lot of people. On a positive there was nothing we wanted for In the cottage, very spacious compared to many."

"Such a lovely place! Well equipped, cosy and amazing views...and we cracked the 1000 piece what if jigsaw!"
    Family ‐ 24 Feb 2019
"Lovely cottage, well maintained, comfortable furnishings, generous welcome pack was much appreciated. Thank you."
    Phil ‐ 4 Dec 2018
"While the cottage itself was excellent, the drawback was the location of the cottage or to be more precise the access was the problem. It had been pointed out when we booked about there being no vehicle access, with the last part being by foot for approx 250 yards, what wasn't described very well was that the walk was up a winding 1 in 4 gradient path, over uneven and muddy surfaces. Arriving at 4pm in November, ber means we arrived in almost darkness, and carrying up luggage etc was a task in itself. Parking was also just on the main road, the social club car park which was originally available is no longer so, leaving our car on a dark and quite busy road did not seem that safe to us, fortunately nothing happened in the time we were there. The cottage was well equipped, beautifully furnished with many nice touches, overall we had a lovely time, and despite a minor problem with the trip switches, which Jake and Faye were quick to come over and sort out the break was good."
    Richard & Pam ‐ 18 Nov 2018
"We all had a super week."
    Letisha ‐ 4 Nov 2018
"Lovely cottage, very nice welcome package. Beautiful setting, with fabulous view across the valley. Shop confidently located nearby. Loved the wood burner and well equipped kitchen. Great enclosed garden for our dog. Would come again. Thank you."
