What our customers say about their holidays

    • Bernice - Verified booking

For those of you who want a cottage that is pretty central for the Highlands we couldn't recommend this cottage enough.

The owners actually live next door, which is handy if there are problems, but after the initial greeting they never bothered us once. The directions to get to the cottage are spot on. The beds were very comfortable and there are adequate kitchen utensils for making your own meals, if you want to. As to food shopping, there is a Spar shop in Speanbridge and there is a large Aldi, a large M&S Foodhall, a large Home Bargains and a large Morrisons in and close to Fort William, which is not far away, so plenty to choose from. The cafe in Speanbridge is good for food during the day, even do a good breakfast and if you want something just a bit special we can highly recommend the Old Pines Hotel and Restaurant next door, where the service and food were really good. There are plenty of places to visit within driving distance, however, there is also a lovely walk just across the road, if you cross the road you will see some wooden steps which lead to a gravel footpath, if you turn right the footpath leads you to the Commando memorial, if you turn left there is a lovely, safe, fume free walk into Speanbridge, where you can join further footpaths and walks, it is called the Highbridge Footpath. Finally, there is the fantastic view, from the lounge window, of the Nevis Range, including Ben Nevis, that greets you each morning, weather permitting. As to the weather, there is no such thing as bad weather, just a bad choice of clothing!

      Very clean and comfortable accommodation.

Well equipped kitchen with virtually everything needed to cater for large hungry family. Washing machine was a bonus as meant outdoor activity clothes were washed. We were lucky as weather was fantastic so could dry washing on the clothes line. Although airer provided drying would have been difficult. Dish washer would have been nice but not essential. Nice extra touches including foil, cling film, Tupperware boxes, salt, pepper and cooking oil provided by owners helped make things easier as these are the things you only need a little of but either need to take it with you or buy and waste. We travelled by train to our holiday and used public transport as well as car while there. The cottage off road parking for 2 cars to rear which is helpful as front of property is on busy main road. Despite this traffic noise was not an issue. Local Bridge cafe does take out pizzas and fish suppers. Until 7pm. Local Spar was well stocked and not too expensive. The local restaurants were booked up so would recommend booking well in advance if you want to eat out in the village. Property is well placed for exploring area and I would consider booking again if planning trip to Spean bridge area again.

My recommendation score of zero is relating to Sykes cottages, rather than the actual property.

I had originally booked this cottage for another date. Something cropped up and rather than cancel the booking I asked to move the date, which was duly done. However, my original booking had a cost of over £700 for the week. The revised date had a cost of £450. Sykes cottages continued to charge me the full amount! So, had the reverse been the case, would I have only had to pay £450 for a £700 week? I doubt it! I challenged this and Sykes tried to say that the matter was up to the owner... and refused to discuss it further. I booked this cottage through Sykes, not the owner. This should have been dealt with by Sykes. Needless to say, I will NEVER book another stay through Sykes Cottages. Customers beware. The actual cottage was located in a gorgeous setting with spectacular views. Inside the cottage, although comfortable, the facilities are dated and this property would benefit from investment. Particularly the hot tub and sauna area - very dated.

The cottage had everything you wanted and needed and more.

For instance if you wanted to make a picnic there were plastic boxes, cling film and tin foil already to be used. I normally pack a box with all the bits that normally are not there in a holiday home otherwise I’m in a supermarket for bits a couple of times during a week. This time everything was there, so thanks that made life much easier. The cottage was cosy and warm to return on an evening in a week with not a lot of good weather. There is plenty of room for an adult group or a family and enough places to sit. That’s a bug bear of mine you can have a house that sleeps six but only four or five at dining table or in lounge sometimes which is no good when we have adult children and grandkids in tow. This house is great, very clean and modern. The location in Spean bridge means you can bob around a good bit touring different places but have a good base to return to each night. All in excellent, thank you.

This property is very well thought out with many useful extras that you seldom find in other holiday accomodation.

We like to cook meals rather than eat out. The kitchen is well equipped and spotlessly clean. The owners are very welcoming and go out of their way to ensure that their guests have everything they need. The property has a useful small shed to the rear which we were able to store our e bikes in. The lounge/dining area is comfortable and spacious. Upstairs the large bathroom has a luxury hot shower and fluffy towels. The bed is comfortable and the room has a lovely view over the river and beyond. The cycling and walking opportunities are excellent in the area. The Caledonian Canal is great for both activities, and just down the road. We hardly used the car and, when back at the property, we also enjoyed sitting out on the decking as garden furniture is provided for guests. All in all a very relaxing and peaceful holiday. I would 100% recommend a stay here.. it's lovely and you won't want to leave!
