What our customers say about their holidays

    • ANITA - Verified booking

Sykes websites states Fridge only, there is a separate free standing small Freezer with drawers.

The Owners both very efficient, friendly, and we’re on hand for any problems, we encountered no problems during our long weekend stay. The Visitors/Guest Book was full of positive feedback and thanks from world wide Guests. Suited us well, two bedrooms, one double, one single, which meant my husband’s use of his sleep apnoea machine at night was easily connected. Shower over bath, which connected to the mains water supply, adjusted by the tap connection. The water pressure brilliant and easily controlled. Ideally a walk in shower is best for people not able to climb over the Bath side. The kitchen has no windows directly to the outside, but the connecting door to the small lobby can be propped open for fresh air and daylight from the outside window and door there. The kitchen lighting is by ceiling strip lighting. Freeview Channel TV. Secure parking for one car in front of the property’s adjacent garage. Quiet area in village, within a two minute walk of the village shop and Post Office. Wifi available, easy to access. File at this property for details, eg cooker instructions, etc. Local Tourist Information available, kept in lounge dresser drawer. Greeted and shown round by the Owner on arrival. Our first visit to the Newmarket area, attending a special birthday occasion. We experienced very slow congested traffic in Newmarket on our Friday arrival. We experienced delays, informing the Owners of our delays. I had decided to re-order supplies from the Waitrose Supermarket, who informed us could not deliver to the holiday address, we then understood why! We did their “Click and Collect” system, which worked well, but the traffic hindered again. (Not enough traffic lights in Newmarket to keep the traffic flowing, I think) There is also a Tesco. Newmarket is world renowned for Horse Racing and Studs. The Owners told us the Newmarket Season came to and end the weekend before, telling us 20,000 influx of visitors. We passed many beautiful properties. Newmarket is also easily accessible by train. There are many locations for visits nearby, eg English Heritage, National Trust. If attended any Horse events, Cheveley village is also ideal, as well as Newmarket itself.

We enjoyed our relaxing stay at Spurling cottage.

This was a lovely welcoming bright cottage, well looked after, clean and extremely well equipped (for which a lot of thought had gone into). As an owner managed and maintained property, the quality was a lot better than some of the managed Sykes cottages of a similar grade which we have stayed in recently. There is a washing machine (which is not made clear in the Sykes details). As self caterers we would normally liked to see larger fridge and freezer facilities but we managed with the local shops and Newmarket being close by. The cottage was well placed for exploring Cambridge and West Suffolk area. Thanks for the warm welcome, fresh flowers and other gifts which awaited us The Sykes directions with the key collection details (which we only used from the B1063) may need revisiting as we found the Brook Stud sign on Left (not right as stated) and we were confused about the left fork mention. Mrs D met us with the key and gave us a brief tour pointing out the main features, which was very useful. Further guidance/instructions to get the best out of the high spec tv (which we are not used to) and details of local walks could be added to the 'welcome file'. . As we book several cottages each year through Sykes we would consider an annual insurance policy rather than a one off. See previous feedback on other cottages re current Sykes website and improvements which could be made.

Tower End has a real wow factor on entrance that doesn’t stop as you take in all the areas within.

The private beautifully dressed outdoor patio area is stunning. We enjoyed the spacious yet cosines of the cottage as a couple with our big fluffy lurcher, Fozzie. We had enough space for his dog bed and found the entrance area so helpful for his towel rub down and paw cleans. The driveway is secure for allowing dogs to wander (if they don’t jump gates) and we parked our car in the ample space at the front of the cottage. The shower room and bathroom are luxury: super soft towels, toiletries and no need forgotten are a highlight of how much the owners want your stay to be pleasurable. They have equipped the kitchen with ample utensils for cooking and a choice of coffee machine/cafetière was a bonus. The bedroom has a hanging rail in the bathroom with ample drawers and cupboards for clothes. Sumptuously dressed bed with mattress topper and lovely choice of lighting; lamps and natural light. We would not hesitate to recommend or return to Tower End. It’s a true gem and located well for much exploration. Local hospitality is superb. We felt very welcome and found the community so friendly.

      The cottage was spotlessly clean.

When I rang the owner 2 days before regarding key collection she asked about the third person in the party, my 18 year old son. The reason, she dresses the bedrooms accordingly, even down to the Headboard being in same colour. The carpets and bathmats lovely and soft. The towels and other accessories to give it that 'vintage dress code'. The kitchen, well it is extremely well equipped, you wouldn't have a problem doing a three course meal. The owner was really nice and met us and shown us where things were, she left some lovely treats in the fridge, around the cottage, and tea, coffee, sugar etc. There were jigsaws, games and books should you be bored, the television had an excellent choice of programmes to watch and my son extremely pleased with the WiFi and its speed. The garden Room a pleasure to sit and read in, as August bank holiday weekend was very hot and reached a dizzy 35degrees. The man shed, that was pure pleasure sitting in there, such treasures you've collected, I did notice all your Nottingham DA Pennants, our home county. We wouldn't hesitate at returning.

We book with Sykes regularly and have always been satisfied.

However, we’re finding the Friday changeover which is increasingly common with a lot of properties, is causing major travel problems for us. Friday, being the last day of the working week, has vast amounts of commercial vehicles using the roads. Consequently the journeys are fraught problems and the roads jammed up up with HGVs. This was particularly noticeable on the A14 with heavy goods vehicles travelling down to Felixstowe. A Saturday changeover would reduce this problem and make a much more pleasant journey for holidaymakers. I don’t know how families cope with a Friday changeover when their children are in school until late afternoon. It leaves us wondering whether the Friday changeover is for the benefit of the property owner rather than the guests,
