From the mysterious moorlands to charming seaside towns, and from sea caves to lively cities, Somerset has so much to offer as a UK holiday destination. And what better way to experience this beautiful and varied county than a stay in a Somerset holiday cottage?

Somerset's stunning landscapes are ripe for exploring, characterised by moody moorlands, rolling green hills and rugged coastline. This quaint cottage is in an excellent spot for exploring Somerset, especially the coast, Quantocks and Exmoor and is in a nice peaceful location. The added touch of wine, biscuits and milk was appreciated. However, we were extremely horrified with the state and cleanliness of the entire property. On arrival on our first evening there was no heating on which made it feel cold and bearing in mind that night time storage heaters are used, meant that it was at least 24hrs before the temperature become comfortable; the storage heater in the kitchen even didn’t work. We visited mid October. There also appeared to be a damp problem, more apparent in the entry way and bedrooms. The carpets and other flooring throughout the property were in dire need of vacuuming/cleaning; we found evidence of fleas and were in fact bitten by them. The bedding in both bedrooms we used was stained, the plaster in one room was coming off the wall and one of the mirror frames had obviously been broken and been repaired to a very poor standard. Some of the curtains at the property were also stained and extremely ill fitting; the towels also appeared to have seen better days! The ones that were left for us to use were threadbare and contained multiple pulled threads. On the subject of the bathroom, the grouting around the bath/shower area was black with mould, likewise the shower screen seal and when the shower was used it leaked water like Niagara onto the bathroom floor. All the taps were water stained, we found hair in the bath and sink from previous occupants as well as the remnants of a poor shot on the exterior of the toilet bowl. Moving on to the kitchen, the appliances e.g. hob, oven, toaster together with some of the cupboard interiors, the sink and the exterior of the waste bin were covered in tea/coffee stains, grease, grime and breadcrumbs. In general the property did not appear to have been maintained to even an average standard or checked properly prior to our arrival as there was still rubbish in the waste bin in the lounge and previous occupants’ possessions were found in the bedroom cupboards and on the back of doors. We would only rate this property overall with one star out of five and that is purely based only on its location.

We had a 4-day stay in early December 2018, primarily to reconnoitre the area with a view to a longer stay in Spring 2019. We know Monksilver from several visits there many years ago, and knew it as a good base for exploring the area - indeed we realised from the online photos that Old Malthouse is next door to the lovely cottage where we stayed all those years ago (it's changed hands a few times since then, and is currently 'under renovation'). We had also read the unfavourable October 2018 review of The Old Malthouse by "Fiona from Kent", and so exchanged several emails with Best of Exmoor, who reassured us that those comments were far from typical, and that the majority of the reviews of the property were favourable. That is the case. We arrived on a cold, wet December day, and found the cottage warm, clean and comfortable. We were a bit disappointed to find no "Welcome Pack" (perhaps not provided for short-stay rentals?). Beds and bedding were immaculately clean, curtains looked (and felt) new, if not perfectly hung, and all towels were clean and of excellent quality - mostly from John Lewis, perhaps recently bought. The wallpaper in one of the double bedrooms, near the bedhead, had been badly patched, perhaps following some damage caused by moving furniture? The kitchen was spotless - no sign of the "stains, grease, grime and breadcrumbs" described by "Fiona from Kent", and the lounge area was very clean and welcoming. I suppose that it's possible that the alleged fleas mentioned in that earlier review might have been left by a pet, but we certainly found no evidence of such critters. We're usually resistant to booking properties where "pets are welcome", but on this occasion were tempted by the location, as well as by the excellent photos on the website. Our decision to book was well-justified, and we greatly enjoyed our short stay in this lovely property.

The location was super quiet and have not had such a good sleep since returning home as beds very comfortable. Easy access to the coast by car in 20 mins and lovely local walks. Lots of useful utensils etc in the kitchen and loads of games and CDs if the weather turns. Pub next door is quiet and noise issues, Minehead only 20 mins off for Lidl, Morrisons and Tesco and MacDonalds if required - otherwise local pubs very good. Cream tea in Stogumber steam line station well worth a visit. Parking at Blue Anchor sea front is free and if you have a dog (sadly we don't) it's ideal for walks etc. Local Dunster castle to visit and the steam railway. Local cider farms, and if raining free WiFi in the cottage. Log burner available if it gets cold and on arrival wine, flowers, milk, biscuits very much appreciated. We made sure to open some windows when we were in, helping to keep the air fresh and the property well ventilated. Couldn't find the cussions for the outdoor chairs but quiet outdoor area was a nice little suntrap. Would definitely book again.

Nice, large sitting room, with very comfortable settees, a good selection of games, dvds and books, as well as a good HD television. We did not use the log burner, as the electric room heater was perfectly adequate. The beds are extremely comfortable and it was nice to have a good quality power shower in the bathroom. The kitchen is spacious and very well equipped. The cottage nestles in a small cul-de-sac, just off the road through the centre of the village. It is a lovely peaceful spot. It is ideally situated for walking in the Quantocks and the eastern end of Exmoor, as well as having easy access to the coast at Minehead. There is no shop in the village but there are small supermarkets and other shops at Williton (3 miles) and three major supermarkets in Minehead. It was nice to arrive to a welcome pack of a bottle of wine, tea, coffee, milk and biscuits. We would highly recommend the Old Malthouse.

This delightful cottage lived up to its excellent reviews. It is spacious and bright, and the kitchen is very well appointed and equipped. This delightful cottage lived up to its excellent reviews. It is spacious and bright, and the kitchen is very well appointed and equipped. Plenty of crockery and a good dishwasher, with supplies of dishwasher tablets, rinse aid, and even washing powder for the washing machine. The lounge was comfortable and warm. The bedrooms were all a good size, with blackout curtains, and our bed was very comfortable. The wifi was good, as was our mobile phone reception. The local pub is a very short walk, and serves lovely food. Booking a table in high season is probably a good idea. The parking space is close. We used The Old Malthouse as a base for starting the South West Coast Path, and appreciated returning to a good shower and well equipped and comfortable home at the end of the day. The tea, coffee, milk, biscuits and wine on arrival were very much appreciated. We would certainly recommend this cottage for a holiday near Exmoor and the coast.
