What our customers say about their holidays

      Amazing, lovely, wonderful!

! We were a single family group who came together to Horsley Head Cottage from different parts of the country. We found the cottage ideally suited to us. Plenty of cooking and eating space (and utensils / crockery etc); very suitable for preparing and cooking 'home cooked' meals for our large group. Plenty of of 'leave me on my own for a while' space; just - plenty of space! Comfortable and thoughtfully appointed without being overdone and without feeling worried to touch anything in case we accidentally left a mark - well done to the owners for all this. We visited in late May; the weather was dry and reasonably warm, but we got the impression the cottage would have been comfortably warm had the weather been cooler. A lovely place to come and stay. One thing for visitors to consider (which actually is part of its charm); the cottage is accessed via an approx. 1/2 mile gravel farm track with some moderately steep gradients. This was ok for our conventional family vehicles, but a particular low slung car may struggle along the track and over the bumps. If you are a cyclist (as I am) this is good cycling countryside, but if you want to cycle 'from the cottage door' this access track may need to be walked with the bike for anyone except experienced cyclists who have a robust bike. This track comes down onto a 'safe' lane to cycle safely to Stanhope and elsewhere. It was a great place to stay - loved it! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

      Overall everything was excellent.

There were just a couple of minor issues but they really didn’t detract from our stay, but thought it would be beneficial for maintenance purposes to mention them. We found the bedrooms to be quite hot, even after the heating was turned off. The water pressure in the showers was poor and inconsistent. In the room above the games room the shower water would pulsate. It was difficult to take a shower, so I decided to have a bath instead. However, the hot tap wouldn’t turn off. Luckily one of the guys had a screwdriver and was able to shut it off, after guidance from the owner who was available by phone on a Sunday morning (sorry). The driveway was rough but we knew that from other guest feedback and was probably made worse by recent forestry cutting equipment and machinery and wet weather. As long as you drove slowly it was fine. Our visit was thoroughly enjoyed by all. There was a fantastic welcome hamper, endless logs, fantastic dining table, more than enough dishes, pots, pans, cups, glasses (a few more wine glasses would be helpful), comfy sofas, games & kids toys. We were sad to leave and are already discussing our next visit.

Cottage was fantastic but Sykes wasn’t.

I was unable to read their emails on my iPhone as their text is all in light grey. So I tried to print them. I was unable to read those and even sent a photo to Sykes in the on-line chat. They had the cheek to say it was my printer. How come the header and photos were totally clear but the print wasn’t. I’m on HPs top ink plan of 400 pages per month and everything else prints perfectly. They wouldn’t escalate it. They sent the information in the post! They need to set text as black and won’t. As a result I’ve booked next year with a competitor and can read their emails perfectly. This particular cottage was amazing, but if you have a small car the underside catches on the farm track centre and my daughter damaged her exhaust. The owner needs to skim the centre of the long tracks with a bulldozer. Nevertheless we had a brilliant time!

Beautiful cottage with everything you could want.

We were 11 in total and the facilities were more than adequate for all of us. Having an en suite to every bedroom was really helpful and much appreciated. The children loved the games room and the toys were an added bonus. We all loved the homely atmosphere in the cottage, particularly the sitting room with the log burner and plenty of comfortable seating for us all. The directions to the cottage could have been better. We nearly ended up in a quarry!! They should have said the cottage was at the end of a track to the left of the road immediately after the first cattle grid. Loved every minute of our stay in a farmhouse surrounded by amazing scenery. The welcome pack was very generous and the chocolate cake was delicious. If you want a beautiful house with lots of space in a beautiful setting this is the place for you.

Excellent location for a family break, we were a multi generational group from age 7 to 86.

The house is located in a rural location and is well equipped and spotlessly clean. Rooms were comfortable and well appointed each bedroom having its own ensuite. The kids loved the games room and the fact it was the other end of the building from the other reception room meant we could relax whilst the kids played. House has a log fire but TBH we never needed it as although the weather was unseasonable cold house was always warm enough. There are a few reviews about the track up to the house, yes this is a rough gravel track but we all had "normal" cars and had no issues traversing it, just drive at a sensible speed. Location is well signposted and easy to find. The house felt like a home from home and everyone enjoyed the stay there, great for a quiet rural escape but not too far from the major centres
