What our customers say about their holidays

    • Roisin - Verified booking

We could not fault 3 Coastguard Station at all.

It is a welcoming homely property that had every amenity required. It has been a thoughtfully restored historic building that just feels fab and truly cared for by the owners. The location of the house could not be more perfect, we loved the convenience of ditching the car and being able to walk to local restaurants and the pub is just a few doors down! We adore the beach so having it literally on your doorstep is both practically and visually amazing, great for our sea dips too! The window seat in the cottage is my favourite spot, the beach and sea view was simply stunning. We have been regular visitors to Rathmullan for 14 years and when our usual holiday home was sold last year we were so sad because we didn’t think we would find another to match it. Lucky for us we feel we hit the jackpot with 3 Coastguard Station and look forward to returning again soon. Separately, we would like to commend the property owner on being responsive to our queries before and during our stay. It took Sykes 2 days to respond to our initial query and by that time we had already arrived at the property. They then took another 2 days to fully answer by which time we had checked out of the property. We are lodging a separate complaint around Sykes customer services which should absolutely have no reflection on the property or owners. We paid a high rate for the property via Sykes and would expect they have high standards of customer service to match, sadly that was not our experience. It was our first time using Sykes and we would be reluctant to use them again in the future. It would be such a shame if Sykes shoddy customer service damaged business for the property, the owner's don’t deserve that because the property is excellent.

The cottage is in a brilliant location by being half way around the Ring of Kerry area but because it is actually situated on the Wild Atlantic Way you do feel the peace and quiet of the area and away from the traffic of the main tourist route.

We saw a mountain goat across the road one day. There is so much to do from here without having to drive very far. Our highlights were Derrynane beach, Kerry Cliffs (with converted bus cafe), the slate quarry grotto and Geokaun mountain walk both on Valentia, the Skellig Abbey remains on Ballinskelligs Beach. McCarthy Castle on Ballinskelligs beach is great fun for climbing up into ..Ballinskelligs beach is lovely, is Blue Flag and has a lovely garden cafe with mini market on Sunday. The beach is perfect for swimming as there are few waves. SuperValu in Cahersiveen is not far away for your big shop and you can top up at Brown’s just down the road for essentials and treats...for gift shopping then Skelligs chocolate factory is a must and the Skellig gift shop just before Waterville is really big with beautiful woollens, pottery, glassware etc. Special Thanks to Mary who looks after the cottage who called on us, she is so friendly and welcoming and recommended places to eat and visit. The cottage sea views are lovely. We loved our stay and will definitely return.

The cottage while dog friendly inside did not have a gate and were using bins to keep dogs in and could easily jump over them or get out between the wheels: The house while it provided everything and good location it needed windows cleaned badly and couches were not comfortable and the mattresses needed replacing on beds the springs are coming through: car parking is not good as it’s hit and miss and if your bringing luggage dogs or if you had children you have to park on double lines to get near the door:there is a lawn which could be used to make a car space and still have garden space: The slugs come in under the door at night as the back door has a space and they get in The washing machine door wouldn’t open and although l rang the owner they were to get the door fixed they didn’t and l didn’t get a call back or any update and still didn’t:had to leave the washing in it when we left While the house is a fine house it’s tired and needs a revamp and better communication:The photo advertising it is a very old one

      Wonderful holiday, thank you Henry!

The property is a thoughtfully renovated, comfortable and well equipped traditional Irish cottage, the kitchen being one of the best I've encountered. The cottage is beautifully located on the shores of Lough Melvin while a beautiful glade of trees beside the cottage provided much needed shade during the recent heatwave! There's lots to see and do in the locality though we also enjoyed swimming in the lake at nearby Derrynaseer ( an excellent alternative to crowded beaches as is nearby Garrison) cycling and walking the quiet roads, edged with lush hedgerows! It's clear that Henry takes Covid precautions very seriously which was reassuring. There were generous touches too like new toiletries and kitchen basics - and not so basics, wine and nice crisps! Although there's no mobile coverage inside the cottage, it's available a few 100 metres up the road - fine by us and promoted a sense of getting away from it all. Communication with Henry was easy at all times. We certainly plan to return - highly recommended!

The cottage was as accurately described by Sykes and, generally, we had a nice time there during our stay.

Cottage Positives: 1. The DVD player provided was essential as there was a very poor selection of TV channels (e.g. no BBC). 2. The double bed was extremely comfortable and we slept well. 3. The location was quiet and peaceful with beautiful sea views to the rear. Cottage Negatives: 1. The water pressure was extremely low and the toilet took what seemed like hours to refill. We were a couple and it didn’t bother us that much, but with a family of 4/5 it could be a real problem. 2. Two power cuts in the first two days didn’t help. The second one lasted for many hours and was a real problem in an all electric house. 3. The toilet seat broke off after two days so we bought a better quality one locally. 4. The dishwasher packed up after a week and hadn’t been repaired by the time we left a week later. 5. With very little to watch on telly, WIFI would have been a godsend to us. It was mostly available in local cafes.
