What our customers say about their holidays

    • Helen - Verified booking

A beautiful barn conversion in a beautiful location.

We had an amazing break and our dogs loved the beautiful garden to run around in. On the clear evenings the star-gazing is amazing with almost no light pollution. Good facilities and we would have given this property and location a full 5 stars, but we have knocked 1 star off because there were some maintenance issues that need to be addressed. We have reported this to the property owners. The downstairs bathroom basin tap was extremely loose and the plug was stuck down which meant during the time of the break one of us could not use the basin. Other maintenance such as cooker hob/cupboard under lighting does not work. Not so much of issue normally, but this area of the kitchen is darker and you need the additional lighting to cook. Also, the bottom, larger oven, did not work. Please don't let this put you off booking, as we are sure the owners will fix these issues for the next visitors. This is a lovely property, large with lots of storage and beautiful views. The utility room is extremely handy, as it keeps very warm and so it's good for drying dog towels, walking boots, washing, etc. A good place to come in from dog walking as you can clean them off before entering the main house. Important to note that the garden is not enclosed. Although the access road is remote and quiet, the owners property is at the back and their dogs pop over to the property for a visit. Not a problem for us, but could be a problem for people who have dogs that are not so tolerant of other dogs. The location is great for exploring Pembrokeshire/Cardigan Bay. 15-20 minutes drive away is Newport Beach. It is a beautiful, sandy beach that is dog friendly. It has toilets and a shack on the beach that even sells dog friendly ice cream! Just a short walk up the road is the golf clubhouse and restaurant where dogs are also allowed and you can get food and drinks, etc. We had a great stay and would certainly recommend the property and location.

Lovely large house for an extended family stay.

Common area at the back with large grass area for games, swings and zip wire, as well as 2 large picnic tables. Really good for younger children. Also a couple of goats and cows in the back field. Lots of space inside the house for different groups of people doing games, watching TV or chilling out. Undercover hot tub - can easily fit 6, if not more. Lovely decoration in the house, lots of chairs and sofas in the rooms for a quieter time. Lovely, helpful and friendly hosts as well. Lots to do locally, I was concerned that might not be the case as this part of Pembrokeshire is not as well known. Between 10 and 20 minutes away: Local beach at Newport is medium sized - even larger with the tide out. Has some great small caves, but keep and eye on the tide. Lovely smaller beaches either side of Dinas Island. Lovely coastal walk around Dinas Island as well, though there are some steep and rocky sections. See Walescoastalpath.gov.uk for more walks. Local Iron Age fort with activities (check before you go as not every day). Shortish drives to local mills who weave beautiful wool, one is called Melin Tregwynt (35 and 45 minutes). Also St David’s with the amazing Cathedral. Reservoir with water activities about 25 minutes away, called Llys-y-fran, also cycling, but the route around the reservoir was a bit of a challenge with several steep hills with slate. Not too far is Picton Castle, lovely to look around with gardens and there are escape rooms - very reasonably priced. Go-karting at westwaleskarting about 30 minutes away. Fantastic fish and chip shop in Crymych, also a lovely health food shop who bake their own Welsh cakes - definitely recommended. Hope that gives you confidence to book this fantastic accommodation and have lots to do locally!! We also booked the smaller house next door to give us even more rooms - beautifully renovated.

The property was warm and large enough in terms of living, sleeping and dining space, but one bathroom and toilet is not sufficient for the size of the property.

The garden isn't secure with gaps and broken panels in the fence, which would allow my small dogs to escape. The garden also had feaces in it, which made it a problem for my dogs. I had to clean them on the first day And after that I couldnt allow them to go outside without a lead. The hottub had far too much chemical in it, it made my families hands peel. The dishwasher wasn't working and the hot tap in the kitchen wasn't working well, so using the hot water from this source to wash up was a problem. We boiled the kettle each time we needed to wash up. Some of the crockery was chipped, and old. Generally the property was comfortable enough, and we enjoyed our holiday but this property needed some maintenance. It felt unloved, it needed some TLC and a spring clean. It could be a really good property with a little bit of attention and maintenance. In terms of ratings, we felt that it falls short of 4.7 out of 5, and is the most disappointing of the 4 properties we have visited from Sykes Cottages site. Some of the things I've listed in my feedback are already documented in the visitors book, and still haven't been actioned. The property location is very quite, and in that way, a good place for a relaxing break. However, within a few miles there are local facilities and access to a small town. We received some locally sourced food item's on arrival, these were appreciated.

Very poor communications from Sykes in lead up to holiday, very slow responses to our questions and contact.

Aware of the problems due to Covid but feel Sykes should have done more to respond to our concerns. Sykes simply hid away under cover of the Covid crisis. We eventually got there and the people (Mrs Davies and husband?) at the house were lovely and all communications about issues we experienced were spot on and we were therefore able to resolve anything that was an issue very quickly. Sykes need to make it clear that provision of cots excludes the provision of s suitable mattress. Also ... Had problems with the 2 upstairs ensuite shower rooms... one was permanently running cold with no hot water pressure, the other was far too small to fit anyone of larger than 5'6" and medium build (this excluded all but one of the adults in the family!)... we were able to use the other showers and bath but this was a bit of negative on an otherwise excellent stay. Overall, loved the house, especially the kitchen, the location and most of the facilities. A little work on the ensuite shower rooms would make it almost the perfect large family get away.

Unfortunately the cottage only has the outside going for, the animals were lovely.

Inside we found the cottage to be unclean, none of the crockery or cutlery were clean. One glass even had mould in and was in the shelf ready to be used. The beds all felt damp and the whole cottage smelt damp especially the kitchen. The beds were very uncomfortable and the ensuites all had glass panels and no locks so no privacy at all. One of the bedrooms had a saniflow toilet which not only made an awful noise but made the entire upstairs smell like drains of you even ran the tap in there. It was so bad we didn’t use it at all so not to make the smell worse. Skyes were very unhelpful despite is being reassured they would sort it out it took all week and they then said approach the owner. Not sure how they will resolve a smell of damp, clear panels in the doors or the fact the cottage smelt of drains in one week of us staying. We left early as it wasn’t an enjoyable experience apart from the beautiful animals in the garden.
