What our customers say about their holidays

We had a wonderful holiday at 1 Brow Cottages.

The cottage is lovely and full of character, but also comfortable, with both central heating and two traditional wood burning fires. Newly decorated throughout, we thought it was a lovely place to come home to each evening. It had all the amenities needed, the beds were comfy, and it was clean throughout. For those who need it, the wifi worked perfectly - our 10 year old played on his console while we there and had no complaints. The cottage felt like it was in the middle of nowhere (which we loved), but it also wasn't too far from main roads; we found it easily, and it was close to many local villages and beaches. During our 3-day stay we explored Whitby, Runswick Bay, Staithes, Goathland, and Sandsend Beach. At the time of our stay dogs were allowed off lead on all beaches, so our pooch had a great time (they're not allowed on some beaches between May and September). For anyone with dogs, there is a large, fully enclosed garden at the back in which you can let your dog out to play. This was perfect for our greyhound and meant we could safely let him out in the evening for a run. It's worth noting that out the front there are often sheep roaming about, so this space at the back is ideal. Finally, Derek (the owner)'s welcome email was also very helpful. It had all the information that we needed for a great stay. If we're holidaying in this area again, we'll definitely stay here, and we'd recommend the cottage to family and friends.

The location was perfect for our stay. We loved being so close to the steam trains and the engine sheds. We had easy access to other places that we wanted to visit. The people in the village were so welcoming, and the food at the Station Tavern was delicious. The Co-op was great for stocking up on snacks and souvenirs. We really enjoyed the walk along the cinder track to Goathland. Such a beautiful and interesting walk. We loved looking around the church and finding all of the little animals dotted around it. The church cafe, run by volunteers on Thursdays, was lovely, too. Lovely, comfortable little cottage. The parking was quite tight, as mentioned in other reviews, but we were glad it was so close. We had to check round the front to make sure we were parking in the correct place. The hidden insurance cost was asked for a week before our holiday, although it has been mentioned in many other reviews, and the agents have said that they will look at it. We didn't get parking or key information until 6 hours before our booking began, which was stressful, because we had to leave home early in the morning and I was worried about having a phone signal to get the information.

1 Brow Cottages is a quirky stone built cottage in a remote location of the Yorkshire Moors.

It has a contemporary feel which compliments the original old features such as stone floors and beamed ceilings. It is generally very well equipped with most of the things you would need for your holiday. We were fortunate enough to have lovely weather so spent most of our time outside (useful because the TVs signal is very erratic and the channels available very limited). There are some very steep hills in the immediate area which really test your calf muscles but are worth the effort for the beautiful walks right on your doorstep. Whitby and Scarborough both have dog friendly beaches and places such as Robin Hoods bay and Runswick bay are well worth a visit. The owner, Derek, is very approachable and responsive via email and will do his best to resolve any issues should the need arise. The cottage is very dog friendly as our spaniel, Rusty, can attest to! He loved the secure, large lawned garden as did we and most evenings we sat out watching the woodpeckers, swallows, curlews etc. Dog owners should be aware that due to the number of free roaming sheep/livestock in the area there are also a lot of ticks and tshould ensure pets are treated before arrival.

      The cottage is delightful.

It's old so bear that in mind. The stairs are steep and narrow but an overweight, arthritic 67 year old managed them easily with care! There are no frills but everything is top quality. The double bed was the best I have ever slept in...and I'm a fussy sleeper. The garden is vast and secure and ideal for inquisitive dogs. The heating is easy to manage; I didn't use the two woodburners at all during my stay but they would have made it very cosy. The cottage is quite remote and very peaceful. My only "better if" would be there was no washing up liquid and only rather dodgy looking hand-wash. Don't expect a welcome pack, but there were sachets of tea coffee and milk available in an emergency. You will need to bring your supplies with you...the village shop in Goathland has the bare essentials only. The directions and information from the owner were excellent. If my knees will stand it, I'd certainly book again! The area is beautiful, even in the wet and wind....of which there was a great deal.

Pleasant cottage in a lovely location. Tidy and reasonably furnished and decorated. Short walk from village shop and train station (also a local pub which we didn't visit as it is closed Mon & Tues) Train to Whitby is nice trip. No steam trains in November. The Cottage was freezing when we arrived. No timers on electric heaters, guess no-one had stayed in a while. Dirty towel hung on the curtain pole. I have never stayed in a property with such barren cupboards! A few sachets of uht milk a few Tea bags. Clearly gone are the days of welcome trays ! I work in hospitality and have managed many properties, for the price paid out of season this one was a little lacking in comforts. I am not sure if this is on the part of the owners or the letting company. On a final note the messages chasing a unexpected insurance fee AFTER booking were not appreciated.
