A Magnificent Victorian Vicarage in the Heart of the North York Moors
Steeped in history and surrounded by breathtaking countryside, The Grange is an exceptional Victorian vicarage built in 1897 alongside the village church. Set within 2.5 acres of mature gardens and private woodland in the picturesque village of Goathland, near Whitby, this remarkable residence offers a unique retreat for up to six guests seeking tranquillity, comfort and unforgettable experiences in the North York Moors National Park.
Perfect for families and friends looking to escape the pace of everyday life, The Grange combines period charm with spacious, welcoming interiors. After a day exploring the stunning moorland landscapes, return home and sink into the comfortable sofas in the inviting sitting room, where a crackling wood-burning stove and television create the perfect setting for cosy evenings together.
The country-style kitchen and dining area is the heart of the home, featuring traditional wooden cabinetry and a central dining table where guests can gather to prepare and enjoy meals while sharing stories of the day's adventures.
The accommodation has been thoughtfully arranged to suit a variety of groups. On the ground floor, a beautifully presented king-size bedroom benefits from access to a contemporary walk-in shower room with WC and basin. Upstairs, guests will find a charming double bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom, alongside a twin bedroom ideal for children or friends.
Outside, The Grange is every bit as impressive. A delightful courtyard offers an outdoor seating area complete with a picnic bench and bistro furniture, providing the perfect spot for al fresco dining, morning coffee or simply soaking up the peaceful surroundings. Beyond, expansive lawns, mature woodland and neighbouring fields invite exploration and relaxation.
As dusk falls, The Grange reveals one of its most magical features. Situated within a designated Dark Skies area, it offers exceptional opportunities for stargazing far from urban light pollution. Guests can marvel at the spectacular night skies from the grounds, with star maps and astronomy information provided to help identify constellations and planets. On clear evenings, you may even be able to track satellites and spot the International Space Station passing overhead, creating memorable experiences for guests of all ages.
The welcoming village of Goathland has everything needed for a memorable stay, from charming tea rooms and traditional pubs to a well-stocked village shop and the famous Aidensfield Stores, recognised by fans of the much-loved television series Heartbeat. The village is also served by a regular bus route between Whitby and York, often described as one of the most scenic journeys in the country.
Railway enthusiasts and Harry Potter fans alike will love the nearby North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where Goathland Station famously appeared as Hogsmeade Station in the film series. Enjoy a nostalgic steam train journey through some of England's most spectacular countryside, travelling between Pickering and the coast at Whitby.
Wildlife thrives all around The Grange. Watch sheep and lambs grazing in neighbouring fields, kestrels and buzzards soaring overhead, and listen to the peaceful sounds of the River Murk Esk flowing through the valley below.
For keen walkers, the surrounding area offers an abundance of scenic trails, including routes to Beck Hole, Mallyan Spout Waterfall, and the popular Cinder Track linking Goathland and Grosmont. For gentler days out, explore attractions such as Cawthorn Roman Camps or Mount Grace Priory House and Gardens.
Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure, peaceful relaxation, family time or unforgettable evenings beneath star-filled skies, The Grange provides an extraordinary base from which to experience the beauty and wonder of rural North Yorkshire.
A truly special countryside retreat where history, nature and dark skies combine to create an unforgettable holiday.

Nice welcome basket provided and even treats for the dog. Would definitely come back in the warmer months to explore the walking area more with the dog.

It's an imposing Victorian property which has been renovated to a high standard and is in a superb location. It's just a short walk from the village of Goathland with its lovely tearooms, it has views of the North Yorkshire Moors and easy access to countryside walks, and the wonderful NYMR steam railway runs nearby. The house, which adjoins the owners' home, is spacious, clean and well appointed throughout. A huge highlight for us though, was the beautiful, large garden which surrounds the property, and was a pleasure to wander or to just sit and enjoy, especially as we had such fantastic weather during our stay. Our dog loved roaming and playing in it each day (and the owners' delightful dog Ava was a bonus playmate). We would love to return.
