What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lorraine - Verified booking

      The cottage was fabulous.

The owner, Elaine , was very friendly and accommodating and left bread, cheese, and milk for us which was lovely as we didn't arrive until after 8.30pm. I cannot fault this cottage, it is Sykes that I have a problem with. We booked 3 holidays in one go from you this year totaling around one thousand five hundred pounds. Each time we got back from our holidays I was emailed to say 'book another holiday and we will give you forty pounds off'. I asked if it could be applied to our booked holidays and got told no, as we had paid the deposits it was not a new holiday. Come on Sykes...... you could not apply the two amounts of forty pounds off each holiday?? This is why I am saying that you failed to meet expectations....you offer anyone money off their next holiday but cannot/will not give it to someone who has booked 3 times with you this year. All the cottages we stayed at were fabulous, the owners were all very friendly and I would highly recommend them.....but Sykes as a company - NO!!

We arrived by Trikes, to explore the area, as such luggage space was limited.

To arrive and find a bottle of milk in the fridge and tea/coffee making basics already there was an absolute boon, as there was no urgency to unpack and run back out for supplies; the welcome muffins were a lovely extra. One of the reasons we selected the property was the off-road parking for our two precious vehicles; something we could not find in town. However the walk to the nearest pub, and into town was easy, although an uphill return. The cottage is absolutely delightful, and has everything a couple could need. It’s a very peaceful and beautiful location, and we both slept very well indeed. One thing of note was how lovely the bedding and towels felt and smelled, to the extent I texted the key holder to ask what they used. My husband also made note of the towel brand, and I am sure will be tracking some down in the near future. All in all, a wonderful place to stay, and one we will return to in future to explore this glorious location further.

We recently stayed at this Cottage and were extremely disappointed with our experience.

From the start, we encountered numerous issues that were never resolved, despite contacting the host. There was no WiFi, the hot tub displayed an error message and had a broken lid, and the TV didn’t work. The cleanliness was very subpar—from a filthy shower curtain, too cleaning items like a rusty dirty mop and bucket left to great you on arrival. Additional inconveniences included a washing machine that moved around the kitchen when in use and a clothesline that had to be retrieved from a bush. After three days, none of these problems were addressed, and our stay was significantly affected. We expected a comfortable, clean, and well-maintained space, but unfortunately, this was far from what we experienced and due to the nature of the issues we decided to end our stay 4 days early. I cannot recommend this property based on our stay.

We did enjoy our stay but we were very disappointed to fine that the basics hadn't been provided for out arrival.

We had a group of 9, 5 being male. None of our group were able to wash there hands after using the toilet on arrival. We expect there to be a small supply of tea, coffee, sugar and milk as most places offer. But we at least expect soap as the bare minimum. We literally had to go to the shop before washing hands. We had to buy everything from salt and pepper, to kitchen foil and washing up liquid. 2 dishwasher tablets were not sufficient. There was a dead fly I'm the unsuite and toothpaste up the door and inside the mirrored unit. The floor in the downstairs toilet was also dirty. Apart from that we did enjoy our stay. Thanks.

We found Drover's Cottage to be an exceptionally well presented and well equipped property.

It was light and airy, and at no point, even during sustained very wet weather and with two dogs, did it ever feel cramped. Elaine and Thomas clearly put a lot of effort in to maintaining the cottage to a very high standard. The location is stunning, with great views across the valley, very quiet, and with direct access on to an amazing network of footpaths leading up on to Wolsingham North Moor and also down along the streams in to Wolsingham. Be sure to visit Hamsterley Forest and to walk from the door using the leaflets supplied in the cottage or downloadable from the Wolsingham Wayfairers website.
