What our customers say about their holidays

    • Susan - Verified booking

The property is excellently positioned for Washam and the White Bear pub/hotel.

Other pubs are available just a short distance. As a dog lover, I appreciated the local walks from one to three hours. My comments on the property itself are as follows: *it would be a good idea to let users know that they can use the Brewery car park before they get to the flat, *the ground outside the front door is littered with cigarette buts. There was no broom to deal with this, *the central heating is very efficient and the flat is warm and cosy, *the kitchen area was well equipped, but the cutlery and crockery were stained and generally in need of a good clean, which we did, *the carpets were deeply covered in dog hair, which was collecting in matted lumps. We gave the place a thoroughly good vacuum throughout, *previous users had complained about the mattress, we don't believe that anything has been done about it. I was OK, but my husband found it uncomfortable, *previous users had complained about the shower - the drain is continually blocked so that it is necessary to use the plunger (provided) but you still have to keep turning the shower off to let the water flow away. The tray is very shallow and there is a danger of it flooding the bathroom if you don't keep an eye on it, *it would be useful to have instructions on how to use the TV, *the instruction for dealing with the rubbish was inaccurate, we could not find any bins and left it in the flat. Obviously, previous users had not left the property as they would like to find it - but maybe that's how they live at home. We didn't expect to have to clean it when we unpacked our stuff. The changeover cleaning needs more attention to detail. We left it as we would have liked to have found it. It's such a shame that I have to make these complaints. It's an excellent flat for two people and a dog and we would go back.

Very happy with the flat and contents. The actual road that the block was in turned out to be a bit more run down than I was expecting, (but to be fair, the whole of Scarborough was rather an unpleasant shock in that respect!). We loved the views of the bay from the living room and kitchen, but the noise of seagulls kept us awake on several nights. (I should just mention that we live close to the coast, so do realise what they are like, but had never experienced them so loudly or during the night to such an extent. ) The weather while we were there was unfortunately not good (there was a heavy bank of cloud over that stretch of coast for 6 of the 7 days that we stayed) while the rest of the country was basking in the heat! So we didn't use the outside space anyway, but would have been put off by the fact that it was so over-looked by all the other flats and the various designated areas didn't have much privacy. It also appeared as though there was no table and chairs in the section that was labelled for Seahaven? Our only other criticisms of the flat itself would be that there was a very unpleasant drainy smell in the bathroom a lot of the time and that although in general the provisions in the kitchen were good (cleaning stuff/sugar/condiments etc.,) there wasn't a tablet for the dishwasher provided. We bought a pack as we have one at home anyway, so were able to take them with us, but if you didn't it would be quite annoying to have to spend out on them. There was one for the washing machine (not that we used it), but would have expected the same for the diswasher. In all other respects it was a nice flat, well decorated and comfortable.

Stayed here over the Goth weekend and wouldn’t stay again. It’s basic, a place to sleep but not much else. Lack of basic amenities, no toilet paper, no working heating, no WiFi, toilet flush takes many tries to work, hot tap barely worked. And it’s a fair walk to the co-op to get the basic necessities that are provided by most other cottages. Other people in our party stayed in a bigger cottage near the abbey which was cheaper and they provided a welcome basket containing basics like teabags, milk etc. so I’d look elsewhere if you’re staying in Whitby. Place was also not very clean. Black mould in the shower, dirty mirrors and hair all over the floors. Knelt down in the bedroom while unpacking and was covered in what I assume was dog hair. Also if you bring a pet, check under the wardrobe in the bedroom as there’s loads of dog toys stuck under there too. Located on a noisy street which can’t be helped but expect to be woken up by the boat yard opposite at 6am and you will hear every person who walks past through the night as the windows are single glazed. Minus the mould the shower is good though, very powerful. Overall, for the price there’s a lot better places to stay in Whitby so I would look elsewhere.

The good: - Great location for Malham and the Pennine Way - Lots of space in living areas and two of the bedrooms - Clean The bad: - Lacking some basics (scissors in the kitchen; saucepans big enough to cook basics for 4) - Very small and compromised bathrooms - In poor state of repair in places (large glass shower door held on with silicone, and fell off; bad smell from drains; TVs in bedrooms not working) - Layout of outdoor space leads to a total lack of privacy in garden (which is shared with the neighbouring cottage). For example, the Hot Tub is placed just a few feet from the one belonging to the neighbouring cottage, meaning no privacy if the neighbours use theirs at the same time. (Especially so if you have neighbours who spend their time smoking, drinking, swearing, shouting and arguing in the hot tub!) We eventually cut our stay short and came home a day early. The owner did offer a partial refund, reflecting some of these issues, but this has never materialised and he has since stopped answering messages asking him to honour his promises.

      Very disappointed.

Only there 10 minutes. Could not stay. Initial impressions were poor, with a ripped net curtain at the window and a front door which needs a good wash. It certainly didn't look like the the photo. No tourist board plaque on the wall now. On opening the door there was a broken make up brush on the floor and the smell of dogs was overwhelming.....and we are dog lovers. The soft furnishings require shampooing, and a deep clean. My husband who has slight asthma very quickly became wheezy, despite opening wide all of the windows and door. I went to make a cup of tea before we left, but filling the kettle at the sink, I found both the sink and drainer to be dirty. The fridge was also dirty, particularly the door seal which contained lots of food crumbs etc, and freezer box door, (several unidentified dribbles of food down it) also it badly needs defrosting.  The interior of the microwave was also dirty, with multiple old food splashes. This property falls well below what we usually expect from Sykes Cottages.
