What our customers say about their holidays

    • Vincent - Verified booking

We travelled to the Isle of Wight with the family (3 adults and 2 young children below the age of 8) for a week long holiday.

Ventnor is a beautiful little beach town and the location of the property was good. It was easy for us to use Pilgrims Loft as our base and travel around the island. Pilgrims Loft provided a great central location meaning that no single journey was more than 30 minutes. On arrival, the accommodation was clean, neat and very inviting. And it was an unusual treat to staying in a converted church. Would I stay there again with my family? In short, no. I can see how many people would love staying at Pilgrims Loft, but if we had to do it again, I would not stay there. I suppose this could have been avoided if I had also a lot more research... The key reasons for this are: 1) Parking is an absolute pain. While there are a few (less than 10) spaces in front of the church, it was near impossible to get a spot. Every time we came back I had to circle the block in the hopes to find an available spot and regularly found myself walking more than a block to get to the accommodation. Plus with the super narrow roads my mirror was also hit by another car trying to pass us once we had found a parking. 2) There was only 1 shower. The accommodation has 1 ensuite and 1 other bathroom. The 2nd bathroom has a bath with a shower head, but as the bath is free standing, you can't shower without wetting everything else in the bathroom. With there being only 1 shower, "bath time" was a constant juggling act moving people through the only shower (in the ensuite). This is not easy with 5 people and would've been far better if there were 2 actual showers. 3) No garden / balcony and as a result, no view. We were incredibly blessed that we had wonderful weather for our whole stay and were able to get outside as much as possible. A garden would've been great to get out into to enjoy the sunshine while at the accommodation. A view in the morning would also have been nice. A garden would have been useful for the kids who would not have needed to run around the house and could at least unload some energy outside. After a week it did start to feel like we were living in a box. For our next visit to IoW, we will definitely do a lot more research and make sure that the basics for a family vacation are in place.

Pilgrim's Loft, a converted chapel in Ventnor, offers a unique stay with both charm and challenges.

While it boasts some appealing features, several areas could use improvement to enhance the guest experience: Location and Accessibility: The property is hard to locate after dark due to inadequate lighting, signage, and directions. The lack of dedicated parking poses inconveniences, especially for guests with luggage or mobility issues. Interior: The spacious main room suffers from poor acoustics. Though well-equipped, the kitchen lacks guest food storage and has impractically high shelving for dishes and glasses. Steps to be provided. Replace bookcase with a cupboard for food & crockery storage. Comfort: While the beds are comfortable and the property is well-heated, steep external stairs and poor lighting can be problematic for elderly guests. Amenities: Essential items like a hairdryer were missing. The main bathroom would benefit from a shower over the bath. A nice touch of bubble bath was absent, leaving the tub unused. Decor: The interiors are beautifully dressed, but the paintwork and doors need refreshing. A softer colour scheme would better complement the building's character than the current stark white. Communication: Attempts to reach management about the missing hairdryer were met with unresponsiveness or unhelpful replies. A thorough pre-handover check of amenities would be beneficial. No welcome basket of goodies was provided, despite other guests mentioning receiving one. A guide to recommended local restaurants would have been helpful. Despite these issues, the property was clean, warm, and provided comfortable beds for a good night's sleep. With improvements to lighting, accessibility, and kitchen layout, Pilgrim's Loft could become an exceptional Ventnor accommodation.

Pilgrim's Loft was the most luxurious self catering apartment we have ever stayed.

In fact it was so full of creature comforts that it was a struggle to leave the apartment every day, despite the Isle of Wight being the most amazing place for a holiday with so much to see and do. The apartment is so well located in the lovely seaside town of Ventnor where it was easy to walk into town for breakfast or stroll along the esplanade to the Spyglass Inn for freshly caught crab. For those looking for a longer walk, Steephill Cove was just 1.5 miles along the Ventnor coastline, a beautiful unspoilt fishing cove with a safe, sandy beach, nestled between rocky cliffs and smugglers' coves. East of Ventnor, we enjoyed trips to Shanklin, Sandown, Bembridge, Ryde, and Bonchurch, just a short walk from Ventnor, has some of the prettiest streets around and a lovely village lake. Godshill in the north is a must, especially for a cream tea at The Old World Tearooms which also caters for vegans and those seeking a gluten free option. Going West, we enjoyed Blackgang Chine, Freshwater Bay and Alun Bay where the cable car and boat trip are certainly worth doing. The speedboat takes you around the needles, the leisure boat takes you to them and then makes the return journey. We had so much fun, it's a must to return. We highly recommend Pilgrim's loft in its superb location for exploring the south coast of the island.

The best part about the apartment was the choice of decor.

It was tastefully done, comfortable and there was nothing that we missed. Everything right from milk, bread, short bread was kept by the owner before we reached and was a delightful welcome. The apolstry looked like it was tastefully done and picked up. There was no interference from anyone around either and added plus it was at a walkable distance from the beach. The main thing that the building lacked was in the design of the house. The roof is low on the top floor and stoops down on the ends causing us to bump our heads on it everytime we wanted to pick up something from the floor. Second thing was the stairs, they are every small. If you are slightly bigger like my husband, it will be difficult to walk around them. In fact he had a nasty fall during the last night that we were leaving and had to be given a first aid. So if you have young children who are not big enough to be careful around the stairs or are of bigger built you might want to look at this as a tip to be careful about. Having said that the owner also had a first aid kit which came handy during the fall. It was a delightful house and would have been better had the design of the house a bit more practical for families.

Overall we had a lovely stay here.

The cottage was clean, beds comfy and all the extras you would need like hand wash, toilet paper, dish cloth, washing up liquid etc. There were also fans provided for each bedroom which was a bonus in the heat. We stayed as a family of four with a 9 year old and 2 year old and one of the main reasons we booked Munday Cottage was because it was advertised that there was a play area located on the site which the cottage was on- West Bay holiday park. However on exploring the site on arrival we were met with a building site in place of the playground and an additional parking area where the tennis courts were advertised through the photos on Sykes website. When I contacted the owner they said that they had told Sykes to remove this inaccurate information but even while we were there these two features were still being advertised on their page. It really was disappointing and my son was disappointed too. The site itself too didn't have many people staying on it. I would say if you are a family with young children this probably isn't the place for you but as a couple or family with older children then it's a lovely quiet corner of the west of the island from which to explore.
