What our customers say about their holidays

    • Devorah - Verified booking

      Would love to give 3.

5 stars because definitely deserved more than 3! The property was beautiful and mainly really clean, thank you! There were a few issues which meant it was not a 4: When we arrived, the bedrooms were freezing cold. Since it took time for the rooms to heat up (and we couldn't see instructions for the radiators) the first night was extremely uncomfortable. It would have helped if someone would have turned on the heating beforehand, and it was a shame that our sleep was disturbed because of this. There was a big draught coming through the bedroom and 'balcony', which even let some water through when it rained, and there were a lot of flying insects around which had obviously been let in when previous occupants opened windows. Beds and bedding were super-comfortable, as was the couch. The property was also really nicely-laid out in a way which maximises the space. We enjoyed using the bright and well-lit kitchen! The water in the property smelled extremely strange - from the sink to the bath, to the shower, which again, disrupted the comfort of using the whirlpool bath, or the facilities at all. Since it gets dark early in the winter, it would be helpful if there was more light by the driveway at night - there was a lantern but it was off, and finding the space was difficult, especially because it is up a small hill. Thank you for the small soaps that were thoughtfully provided. We were surprised to see there was no bar of soap or anti-bacterial handwash, which are usually available in self-catering holiday houses. (Also a bin bag, coffee/sugar and some fairy liquid would seem to be basic, for the first night when guest arrives...) The TV video player remote had run out of battery, which meant DVD could not be paused or controlled by remote, which again, if no batteries are provided, cause guests to have to inconvenience themselves to buy new batteries or manage without. We enjoyed our stay in the property, but were disappointed at the issues with the temperature, water, insects and lack of some basic amenities, which let it down. This is a beautiful property, which could be really spectacular if these issues were ironed out.

Just returned from a 5 night stay at 2 New Barn Hillfield.

This was a last minute decision so we were a bit apprehensive about the accommodation as there were only a couple of reviews … however we found the accommodation to be very clean, quite and comfortable. There was a bottle of Rose on arrival which was a lovely touch ,Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom and all the necessities you needed to start your holiday including dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, rubbish bags etc. The kitchen was well stocked with the necessary utensils and crockery, cutlery etc. The beds were very comfortable and the accommodation had an airy, modern, open plan feel. The site was clean and well run with friendly staff. No noise at all from the construction areas and this is well away from 3 New Barn so not in view . Excellent location , close to Dartmouth and the surrounding areas. We also had a courtesy call on the second day from coast and country to check all was well. Would book again! The only thing to mention for future guests is that the doors do slam so if you have a teenager with you like we did who forgets this, you have a rude awakening if you sleep before they do! soft close hinges would be the way to go otherwise it’s putting something in between the door and frame to prevent the slam. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

The accommodation is perfect, plenty of space and amazing views from all the Estuary facing windows. This is our second stay because we love the area and this is one of the best apartments we have stayed at. The staff at Original Cottages were, as ever, very helpful. Spotlessly clean and comfortable lounge with three large bedrooms and would accomodate three couples. Our beds were comfortable and there was plenty of eating space in the kitchen. Sadly no necessities were provided on arrival and had to do a small emergency shopping to see us over until the morning. Good supermarkets are mostly within walking distance and a short walk down the hill behind the apartment there are some amazing eateries and the main shopping area. The slope down from the offloading area is quite steep and the front step a little difficult but once inside you will be well rewarded. The free parking pass for the Mayor's Carpark was most acceptable but we were lucky to be able to get the occasional space in a closed location.

The cottage is in a very convenient location with stunning views across the river. As has been mentioned before parking is a bit of a nightmare for loading/unloading (we had to stop on double yellow lines) but that was the compromise to be able to stay in that location and the parking pass to a nearby car park was a welcome addition. The cottage has so much space and was very clean on arrival. It has very comfortable beds and we were grateful for the blackout blinds in the bedrooms. My only gripe was a lack of a welcome tray- nothing says 'welcome' more than a home baked cake or local biscuits, a pint of milk in the fridge and some basic items such as tea & coffee. I'll be honest this is the first place I've ever stayed where there has been literally nothing to welcome us after our journey. In spite of this, I would definitely recommend this property for its location and comfort.

      This listing is absolutely wonderful.

All rooms are spacious and clean. Three guests were working from home during our stay and no problems with the internet or space to work. The property had every facility that we could hope for, backed up by helpful additions of dishwasher tablets etc, very thoughtful. I think that the listing does not do justice to the amazing views from this property, step onto the balcony and the views are breathtaking and it feels as if you are part of the river traffic. Just spectacular. Our only problem was with Sykes Cottages, impossible to get hold of anyone to ask for the twin beds to be put together as one bed. After a circuitous route and long wait I was eventually assured this would be done but on arrival it was not. We had to push the beds together ourselves with single bedding. It feels like Sykes Cotteges take your money and run.
