"I stayed at Kestrel Cottage with my 96 year old mother in law. I had chosen the property for its wetroom, bedrooms all on one level and it's proximity to Durham. The cottage far exceeded all my expectations. It is much bigger than the photographs suggest, bathrooms, hallways and living area are very spacious. Everything is very new, tasteful and not worn out or shabby. The beds are really comfortable and the linen is good quality. The main living room is south facing so it's light, and bright. The views from the two full length windows are stunning, open fields and countryside. We were visited every morning by two friendly goats at the fence by the patio. Most afternoons we watched parachuters descending to an area about a half a mile away. All most entertaining. We could park at the door which was very helpful as my mother in law couldn't walk too far. In the wetroom there are handles to aid the not so steady. The owner kindly brought us a proper shower seat too, which was so useful.Even though very early in the year we found a lot to do in the area. Durham is nearby, we went several times. I highly recommend the Oriental Museum, we visited the botanical garden, cathedral and castle. The Hartlepool maritime museum was excellent. We went to Gateshead quay. Just a couple of miles away we went to the big outlet shopping centre and the coastal towns and coast road are on the doorstep. All this to do, and then at the end of a busy day out the cottage was a relaxing, warm and welcoming home to come back to.Jean the owner was friendly and helpful, she lives nearby but wasn't intrusive at all. The welcome pack was extremely generous, including eggs, bread, milk. Kestrel Cottage was an excellent choice for our holiday and we were delighted with everything we found there."

"S78608 is well presented both inside and out, however, there were a number of factors that let it down for us.The cottage was pretty chilly when we arrived so we decided to turn up the thermostat. Problem being, we couldn’t find it anywhere. Consulted the info pack, found the manual but no indication of where the thermostat was! Contacted the owner but didn’t receive a reply until around 2 hours later (reason was explained and is understandable). The thermostat was hidden behind the microwave! I don’t know why it couldn’t be placed somewhere more visible or why the info folder doesn’t state where it is!As for cleanliness, there was a mass of toast crumbs under the toaster and the large mirror in the main bedroom was really dirty. Not huge problems but it does hint at a lack of attention to detail. In terms of equipment, the kitchen tongs didn’t grip properly and the oven glove was stained and the outer fabric worn/burnt away. Again, not major issues but something that could be improved on.The main problem for us was the very early morning heavy traffic noise. The cottage is on a main route through the village and farm and haulage traffic hurtles through from 5am each day. The noise from the traffic and the rattling of the single glazed window in the main bedroom made it impossible for us to sleep much past 5am. For anyone wanting to start their day at that sort of time whilst on holiday, it might not be an issue. However, if you’d like be woken gently at a more acceptable hour, S78608 might not be for you! Having the front of the cottage double glazed like the back is, would no doubt be a huge help with this."

"The cottage was clean and comfortable. Our mattress was an orthopaedic memory topped mattress but we sank into the middle and the springs pinged and basically we didn’t sleep the entire time we were there. However, everyone is different with their mattress preferences so I can’t knock them for this, it just didn’t suit us. The kitchen was fully equipped, but had no baking trays (we couldn’t find any) for the oven which was a pain but we muddled through. Toaster, microwave, knives, bottle opener, dish washer etc all there. (Bring your own handwash and dishwasher tablets). The underfloor heating on the stone floor was lovely. Very nice modern touch and kept cold feet at bay. Staff on site were very friendly and efficient. Even gave us a bottle of white wine as a welcome gift on arrival which was a lovely touch and much appreciated! The swimming pool was clean, the kids loved it! Found it easy enough to put the cover on after use if your the last ones out at night. WiFi - you can request a 4G data box at £5 per 1GB. It’s cheaper and better to add on a data package to your phone plan as you can get a full reception and 4G coverage anyway.Nearby there’s plenty to do within a short drive - out of everything we did, Hamsterley Forest was the best. And Coppermine was the nicest for food. The shared swimming pool was a big hit, most of the time we had it to ourselves which was great. And we could watch the kids from the hot tub or the comfort of the sofa so win win! For the price we paid, we would definitely come here again, and get our friends to rent the cottage next door too!"

"We booked this delightful property for a family celebration - my mum’s 70th birthday. We chose it mainly because it was just a three-hour drive for everyone (we are fairly far-flung, residing in North Wales, Nottingham and Edinburgh) - and we were thrilled to discover how lovely it was. The location is superb: Bishop Middleham is a quiet village, but it does have two pubs - and there is a well-signposted circular walk (about 3 ½ miles) that really shows off the area. It’s a bit muddy, but worth the muck! Durham is a short drive away, and we enjoyed exploring its picturesque centre. The property itself is near-perfect. There were eight of us - and the two teenagers certainly appreciated having their own single bedrooms up in the eaves. Two of the double bedrooms are very spacious; the third is much smaller but still adequate, and all are beautifully decorated. The shower is great - I really appreciate a hot, powerful shower. None of us made use of the enormous bathtub, but it lends the place a real sense of luxury. The communal areas are all ideal - the living rooms large and comfortable, and the kitchen accessible and well-stocked. The garden is a particular delight; we enjoyed sitting outside for coffee, even when it was raining. We also appreciated the cakes that were waiting for us on arrival. Yum.Would we recommend S88932 to others? Yes, without hesitation. In fact, we’ve already booked a return visit."

"This is a stunning holiday home. Lots of attention to detail to make you feel very welcome. Incredibly clean throughout. The massive bath is awesome (take lots of bubble bath!) and the kitchen is vey well equipped. The downstairs shower is also really good. There is a really great play park 3 minutes walk round the corner. The outside area is perfect for dogs and there is an great outhouse for doing laundry. The two pubs have friendly locals. A large supermarket is 5 mins drive away in the lovely village of Sedgefield. Durham is about a 20 minutes drive away and well worth visiting. The Cross keys pub up the road offers a great menu and a pool table. Plenty of room for parking in the village if you have more than one car. To be honest there is nothing negative to say about this home. We have stayed in many cottages over the years and this is definitely the best."
