About this property

This charming, stone-built Victorian cottage sits near the heart of the historic mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, deep in the Snowdonia National Park, with stunning views of the Moelwyn mountains from the rear of the property. Blaenau offers a wide range of shops, eateries and bars all within easy walking distance for you to stock up or enjoy a meal or drink out. Providing an idyllic base for exploring the wild landscapes of North Wales, Trigfa offers a superb escape for families and groups at any time of year. Upon arrival, step through the front door and discover the spacious lounge and dining area with a character slate inglenook fireplace with the modern convenience of an electric log burner and a Smart TV, a homely atmosphere where you can relax after a long day of adventure. Move downstairs to the kitchen, situated on the lower ground floor, where there is further seating for dining and access to a large bathroom and a back garden with panoramic mountain views and a picnic table and barbecue available for your use. As you look to settle down for the night, there are two charming bedrooms, including the master with double bed and en-suite shower room, and a cosy room with bunk beds and far-reaching mountain views. When you’re ready to explore, Snowdonia is a hiker’s paradise, with many hiking trails available right from the doorstep, from easy to very challenging! For beachgoers, there is a choice of two spectacular coastlines, both a short drive away – to the north (Conway, Llandudno, Anglesey) and to the south & west (Harlech, Black Rock Sands and the Llyn Peninsula). For those seeking adventure you’ll be spoilt for choice with plenty of activities available close by in Blaenau, including the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Zip World Titan, Zip World Caverns, Bounce Below (deep mine zip wires and the largest underground system of trampolines in the world!) and even underground crazy golf. Antur Stiniog, also in Blaenau, have a range of world class downhill BMX runs for the truly fearless with uplifts available to take the strain! For those with their own bikes, there is a secure garden shed available in Trigfa’s rear garden. To explore the area in a more leisurely fashion, treat yourself to a trip on Ffestiniog Railway - the original railway taking slate from the quarries to Portmadoc, an outstanding mountain journey with truly spectacular views - or visit Portmeirion, an Italianate village famous for its architecture. Alternatively, explore one of the many local historic castles at Harlech, Caernarfon, Conwy and many others.

Blaenau Ffestiniog, a fascinating old slate town, boasts an ideal location from which to explore Snowdonia National Park. Plenty of retail outlets, watering holes, and dining establishments can be found here. Zip World Slate caverns, home to the world's longest and fastest zip line, is one of the top things to do in the area. Slate mines have been awarded unesco's prestigious designation as a world heritage site, and now curious tourists can take fascinating underground tours to see mining as it was done in bygone eras. A famous narrow gauge railway, the Ffestiniog mountain railway, travels for 13 miles through Snowdonia National Park to the port town of Porthmadog. The nearby Portmeirion village is well-known for its architecture and as the location where The Prisoner was filmed, and there are also family-friendly beaches in the area.

The hosts accommodated me at short notice and were really kind and attentive. It's a lovely cosy cottage which is kept really well, and has an endless supply of activities and walks in the local area. I always found somewhere to park without trouble and got to see some wonderful sunsets over the valley.

The heating was modern and got the cottage cosy at the end of a cold day out. The place was well kept and in good order. The piano/organ was delightful! The rooms were big enough for 2 and there was enough storage for the week. The check in system was simple. It was well located, in walking distance from 2 supermarkets and a pub. It was just right for our needs (2 adults and 2 primary aged children). The main downside was the cleanliness of the linen. We emailed the owner and the same day fresh linen was provided (flat sheets, towel and tea towels). Unfortunately on the last day we discovered the main bed flat sheet had been dirty from the start too (we stripped the bed and found dirt on it in a place we hadn't slept). The electric shower in the ensuite had a quirk where it dropped power and went cold before coming back burning hot. It scalded our 10 year old on the second night so we had to take extra care for the rest of the holiday. Parking was tricky with a 4x4 sized car but this was clear when we booked so that's the chance we took.
