The Old Mill in Shropshire is highly praised for its unique charm, peaceful environment, and welcoming owners. Guests appreciate the well-equipped facilities, cleanliness, and the beautiful, dog-friendly gardens. The property's location is ideal for nature lovers and those seeking tranquillity. Some guests mention it can be chilly in winter but find the provided heaters helpful. Overall, it's a favourite for its character and comfort.
Reviews consistently mention that The Old Mill is clean and tidy, with no negative comments on cleanliness. This suggests a very high standard maintained by the owners.
The property's location is frequently described as peaceful, beautiful, and convenient for exploring Shropshire and Wales. Its proximity to nature and quiet surroundings contribute to a high score, although the remoteness may affect accessibility.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the property cosy, though some mention it can be cold in the winter. The provision of electric heaters and a log burner mitigates this to an extent.
The Old Mill is praised for being well-equipped, particularly the kitchen, despite a few comments about the lack of sharp knives and a small fridge. The gardens and walks are appreciated, and the renovation incorporating mill equipment is a highlight.
Several reviews mention a warm welcome and thoughtful touches like a welcome pack, which are highly valued by guests. However, as these gifts are not guaranteed for every stay, they are a delightful bonus rather than an expectation.
The Old Mill is a delightfully restored listed mill set next to the owners’ own home in four acres of land adjacent to the River Camlad in the Vale of Montgomery. Surrounded by lovely countryside, there are far-reaching views in every direction, including the Kerry Ridgeway and the Long Mountain, a perfect location to sit back and relax and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. Immaculately presented throughout, with many thoughtful finishing touches, this cottage is ideal for friends and families wishing to spend some time together in this peaceful location close to the Welsh/Shropshire border. The cottage has been carefully and lovingly restored with the impressive old mill workings retained as its centre piece, rising throughout the cottage.
The property oozes charm and character and boasts an abundance of exposed beams, oak doors and frames and a winding staircase, flagged floors and sloping ceilings. Set over three floors, the cottage boasts lovely countryside views from the second floor bedroom. Step into the welcoming, fully-equipped country-style kitchen with dining area, with the old mill workings cleverly displayed. This leads into the spacious and light sitting room with comfortable sofas and a warming woodburning stove for cooler days, together with French doors out to the secluded garden. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, both with their own facilities. On the first floor the twin room has an en-suite shower room and on the second floor is the spacious double room with king-size bed and Juliet balcony, low ceilings and character beams and Jack-and-Jill access to a lovely bathroom.
To the rear of the cottage is the private lawned garden and patio area, beyond which there is access to the river where visitors can look out for kingfishers and other wildlife. The garden is enclosed by fencing and hedges and is a secluded spot for enjoying the peace and tranquillity with the river gurgling in the background. An interesting feature of the Old Mill is that it is heated with a modern, eco-friendly heat-pump, which takes heat from the nearby river. This provides underfloor heating on all floors, and hot water for the whole house; a modern twist on its earlier heritage.
Delightful walks and cycle rides are on your doorstep with Offa’s Dyke close by. Comfortable and everything we needed. The owners were very welcoming and I will recommend The Old Mill to anyone who wants to stay in the Shropshire/Welsh country side, especially with a four legged friend. Plenty of walks locally and we also spent the day in Barmouth. Not too difficult or too far to get to.

The house itself was amazing and a great location from which to explore the surrounding area. It had everything we could need to ensure we had a great stay. Our dog loved the gardens too and loved the walks in the area. Our host was extremely helpful and courteous and we would like to thank her again for making our stay so enjoyable. Highly recommend a stay here to anyone. Peaceful, relaxing and a beautiful location.
