Swn Y Gwynt is a well-loved holiday home in Criccieth, praised for its stunning views of Cardigan Bay and convenient location close to the beach and town. Guests appreciate the spaciousness, well-equipped kitchen, and the new decking area. While some find the property homely and comfortable, others note it could benefit from updates and a more thorough clean.

Reviews indicate a mix of experiences regarding cleanliness. Some guests found the property to be clean and tidy, while others reported issues such as a smell of stale cigarette smoke and a general need for a more thorough cleaning. The presence of both positive and negative comments leads to a slightly above average score.

The location is highly praised for its spectacular views and proximity to the beach and town centre. The steep hill access may challenge some, but the overall convenience and attractiveness of the location are consistently noted as positives.

Comfort receives a good score as many guests describe the property as homely and welcoming. However, there are comments about dated decor and the need for new mattresses, suggesting room for improvement in this area.

Facilities are generally well-received, with mentions of a well-equipped kitchen and spacious areas. Criticisms focus on maintenance issues such as non-working lights and a need for modernisation, which affects the score.

About this property

Swn y Gwynt is all about the setting and the stunning views across Cardigan Bay with the backdrop of mountains and Harlech castle. This lovely holiday cottage is owned by a Dutch family who have refurbished it to a high standard whilst retaining its original charm. It is an 'upside down' house, making the most of the spectacular sea views. The open plan sitting room is surrounded by a balcony - open the door and bring the outside in and while away the hours watching the sun setting over the bay.

The small and welcoming entrance hall has a well stocked bookcase for your holiday reading.

On the first floor the open plan sitting and dining room is a lovely sociable family space. It has large windows and a door onto the balcony which make it the perfect place to sip wine whilst watching the sunset over the bay. It is a light and spacious room with fantastic views and lovely homely touches including a selection of children's games stored in the antique crib. There is a flatscreen TV and DVD player, comfy fern green sofas and chairs and an open fireplace, ideal for those real fires on blustery winter evenings.

The dining area is bright and cheerful and is situated at one end of the sitting room next to the kitchen.

The fully equipped kitchen has views of the surrounding countryside. It has a large fridge, microwave, dishwasher, electric oven, combination microwave cooker, electric hob and extractor hood. For the chef of the party there are plenty of cookery books for you to enjoy!

There is a separate small utility room with a second fridge, washing machine and freezer.

There is a cloakroom with loo and wash hand basin.

On the ground floor there are three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The first bedroom is light and airy with a double bed, built in wardrobes and fabulous sea views. The second bedroom is another double with stunning views. The third is a twin bedroom with two single beds and countryside views.

The funky retro style family bathroom has a wash hand basin, bidet, jacuzzi bath and separate shower with grab rails and seat for the less mobile.

Outside there is parking for 2 cars. The beautiful gardens surround the house where you can relax and enjoy the peace and scenery from the raised seating area. The sea views at the front and the open fields all around make this a wonderful place to relax with friends or family. The patio area at the side of the house has seating and a built in area for using portable BBQ's (bring your own disposable BBQ).

It is easy to pop down to the beach and the town of Criccieth for a bit of hustle and bustle. You can wander around the quirky shops, and lovely restaurants - or have an evening pint in the pub. Take a night off from cooking and try the fish and chips - they are excellent!

Please note that the garden is on different levels in parts and there is a balcony with railings on the first floor from the sitting room, so it may not be ideal for the very young or elderly and care must be taken. The drive is fairly steep and narrow when reversing.

Often described as the 'Pearl of Wales on the shores of Snowdonia’, this delightful seaside town is situated just 5 miles from Porthmadog. The town’s 13th century castle perches majestically on a rocky outcrop, dominating the skyline and offering superb views of Tremadog Bay and the Snowdonia mountains. Watersports enthusiasts will be delighted by the two beaches, whilst walkers and bikers are spoilt for choice by the proximity of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. Stroll along the beaches, watch porpoises playing in the surf, or relax in the various pubs, restaurants and tea rooms, sampling the famous Cadwalader’s ice cream. Further afield, attractions such as Portmeirion’s wonderful Italianate gardens, the Ffestiniog railway in Porthmadog, Harlech Castle, Caernarfon Castle and the beautiful beaches and renowned golf courses of the Llyn Peninsula are all within an easy drive.

I rented this property last year and mentioned both mattress in the large bedrooms, but only one was replaced, this caused my son and his girlfriend to cut their holiday short because they had mattress springs in their back for 4 days.I like the view and thought a year later the mattress would be new. This year I was disappointed in the property. Kitchen fridge not working only the light, I had groceries spoiled and meat.No bins bags I had to go and buy some, broken patio furniture just left outside on the balcony ,tiles broken around the toilet in the bathroom and no pressure in the shower. damp patches on the walls in the main bedroom, large hoover has the handle broken, so it was difficult to use. The house is now for sale, so it needs a really good clean and fresh paint. The house was generally much worse than when we rented it last year.

Really outstanding and you'd be hard pushed to beat them. Check in time of 6pm and check out of 9.30am is a bit of a joke though and don't even bother to request an earlier or late check in as you'll get a flat 'no we don't accommodate such requests'. With that amount of time allocated for cleaning you could reasonably expect the place to be spotless at least. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case. First thing we did was run everything in the kitchen through the dishwasher and I can honestly say I've never had to do that before. I am not sure why a dog-friendly property this close to a beach doesn't have hard flooring - so much easier to clean. The green carpet in the front bedroom was particularly grim. The property is on the colder side and the heating system is pretty ineffectual. When we were there it was around 18 degrees outside and we needed the heating on inside and it was barely warm enough. Any colder and you will be freezing and there are no extra blankets or duvets anywhere so if you are the type to be cold at night, best bring your own. There is also not anywhere to dry anything very easily so if you get caught in the rain, chances are everything will still be wet the next morning. The bathroom is incredibly dated. The shower has no water pressure at all and if you are any bigger than average you will struggle to fit in it. I ended up having to wash my hair over the bath with a jug which I haven't had to do since I was four and visiting my grandma in 1989. The shower also switches between scalding hot and freezing cold with no warning so be careful if you have kids. The bath is a whirlpool bath, and, given the general lack of cleanliness with the rest of the place, I wouldn't trust that it has ever been cleaned and sterilised properly and I didn't fancy legionnaire's so we didn't use it. No place to hang towels and arrived to find an empty bottle of handwash by the sink which is very annoying. Kitchen was reasonably well equipped - in that you could easily host a four course banquet if required. No bin bags anywhere to be found though nor or anything to clean/wipe up with (sponges, washing up liquid, anything). The fridge in the kitchen itself doesn't work and unfortunately we didn't realise until we had lost a considerable amount of milk and some bacon and sausages. It is on and running but it doesn't get very cold. Thankfully there is one in the utility bit that, if anything, is a bit too cold so use that one. Be extra careful not to leave anything behind. I think I might have left a charging cable but for a flat fee of £15 to return any lost items, I'll just be thankful it isn't a child's irreplaceable beloved toy and move on.

We really love the house it’s so homely. The new mattress in the master bedroom is super comfy. Really sad to leave. Had a wonderful relaxing holiday. When can we book again for next year? We have already looked but it’s showing no availability yet. We can’t wait to return to this little corner of heaven.
