Sometimes at Cottages.com we walk into properties and are immediately impressed; this was one those properties. Located just south of the historic ’Royal Burgh of Lanark’ which itself is steeped in history, is this gorgeous property in the small area known as Sandilands.
Set adjacent to a former railway line at the old Sandilands Railway Station outside Lanark and a 30 minute walk to The Falls of Clyde, close to the World Heritage site at New Lanark and in a rural setting, a few miles inland from the Cairn Lodge services on the M74. The property is best described as an ’upside down’ house, a design implemented to take full advantage of the view over the countryside on the opposite side of the road.
The house, which was built in 2022 and completed in autumn, features an open-plan kitchen and dining room on the ground floor, which has been fitted and equipped to high standards. A range cooker will give guests the chance to prepare a ’Masterchef’ style meal for one another and enjoy at the nice dining table. The dishwasher will take care of the mucky bits after dinner so guests can retire upstairs to where the living area and bedroom are located. French doors from the living area led to an elevated decking area. The shower room on the ground floor completes the accommodation and in tune with the rest of the presentation in the property has been finished and presented to high standards. Parking is provided on site in a guest car park.

The Tooles
We had a wonderful stay at The Railway Sleeper in Lanark, Scotland. Our host, Alan, was a lovely man and made us feel very welcome. He suggested several places for us to visit, and his recommendations were excellent.The accommodation itself was immaculate, comfortable and luxurious, with beautiful, very good-quality furniture throughout. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the whole property felt beautifully presented and relaxing. The setting is absolutely lovely, peaceful, pretty and surrounded by beautiful countryside. We particularly enjoyed seeing the sheep on the hills opposite while relaxing in the hot tub, as well as watching the many different birds visiting the bird feeder, which could be enjoyed from the Juliet balcony.There was also a complimentary bottle of Pinot in the fridge, which was a lovely and much-appreciated touch and delicious too!Alan kindly let us know that the water pressure was a little low during our stay, which occasionally made the shower and washing dishes slightly less convenient, but it certainly didn't spoil our stay.One small thing that may be helpful for future guests to know is that the property may be more suited to those who are comfortable using stairs. I have mobility issues myself, and because the stairs are quite steep, I found going up and down them a little challenging at times, particularly as the toilet is downstairs. This is very much a personal consideration and may not be an issue for most guests.Similarly, the kitchen stools were not quite suitable for me personally due to my mobility issues, although I imagine they would be perfectly comfortable for most people.Overall, these were only minor considerations for us and did not take away from what was a truly lovely stay. The accommodation, cleanliness, comfort, beautiful surroundings and, above all, Alan's wonderful hospitality made this a very special place to stay.We would happily give The Railway Sleeper 5 stars and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, comfortable and luxurious break in a beautiful setting.
