Harbour Street is a lovely sea view cottage in the charming village of Portmahomack. As expected given the name, the cottage is close to the harbour and from the front garden you can see the hustle and bustle of the few remaining fishing boats going about business. The garden is wrap-around and spacious. Laid mostly to lawn, but there’s a lovely sitting out area at the front making most of the sea view. The view from the cottage is sublime. Beyond the harbour you look out across the Dornoch Firth towards the Sutherland mountains in the distance. The bay you look out on is rich in wildlife so keep your eyes peeled when scanning with the binoculars as you have a very good chance of spotting dolphins, porpoises, seals, a wide array of sea birds, and even orca pass by from time to time.
Portmahomack is an old fishing village and a wonderful place to spend a week or two. There’s a good pub a nearby serving food, a local restaurant and a cafe. The sandy beach is a few minutes walk, and if so inclined, there’s a decent short golf course just up the hill on the outskirts of the village. Situated on the Tarbat Peninsula, Portmahomack is an abnormally dry place (one of the driest in Scotland) and enjoys high sunshine hours per year.
Near to the village is the iconic Tarbat Ness Lighthouse which you can walk out to from the village. The coastal path leads along to different villages, most associated with the herring boom of the 18th and 19th centuries like Portmahomack, and some with other histories too. Rockfield is a remarkable, hidden seaside hamlet, and the Seaboard Villages a little further away are fascinating to visit and enjoy.
Tain is fifteen minutes away by car and has supermarkets, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as the Glenmorangie Distillery and a fantastic links golf course designed by Old Tom Morris. In the summer the Nigg Ferry is worth a trip as the smallest car carry in Britain taking only two cars at a time. It’s not busy and the journey is only ten minutes across to Cromarty and the Black Isle.
At Tain you can join the A9 which is the NC500 touring route. Follow this north, south and west for many day trips, including to Dunrobin Castle, John O’Groats, the Castle of Mey, the northern surfing beaches of Melvich and Strathy, and many more amazing places. One thing is for sure though, after having amazing days exploring this brilliant part of the world, you’ll look forward to returning to comfortable Harbour Street and sit out in the courtyard watching the sun go down over the Sutherland mountains.
Portmahomack is a popular place year-round for holidays and it’s easy to see why. We encourage you to book now and be forever glad that you did so.

Our second stay at Harbour Street and it was another wonderful holiday here. As ever, the property was comfortable, immaculately clean and contained everything you'd need in a holiday home. Ann is incredibly helpful and friendly too!The views are stunning as always and it is great that the Castle Hotel in the village has been refurbished and has started doing lovely food.Everyone we met was friendly and chatty and it was lovely to see the dolphins in Portmahomack bay while we were on the beach. We've booked again for 2027!!

Second time staying at Harbour and we enjoyed every minute of the week. The hosts are brilliant and very welcoming, they left us a wonderful welcome pack and the kitchen is well stocked with everything we needed. Comfortable beds and sofas, very clean, warm and cozy. The house has breathtaking views across the Dornoch Firth, a well stocked shop in the village and a great pub with superb food and owner/staff. We will be staying there again for sure.

We found heaven when we arrived at 2 Harbour Street, the cottage was warm and spotlessly clean with comfy sofas and comfy beds, the kitchen is very well equiped and very clean.Portmahomack is a beautiful village, right on the beach with a well stocked shop and a great Hotel serving drinks and good food and staff are friendly and polite. We didn't meet David the owner but his sister Anne is a delight and lives next door. The parting gift is a very nice gesture and we're already considering booking for next year or maybe sooner.
