About this property

A Grade II Listed cottage, built 1605, and located in the village of Ruswarp, a mile from Whitby. Ivy Cottage is an idyllic retreat for families and groups of friends seeking a truly charming place to unwind together.

Its picturesque, ‘chocolate box’ appearance is artfully balanced with contemporary comforts, such as a fully equipped farmhouse-style kitchen, Smart TV, Every room is sympathetically decorated to create a relaxed, homely ambience with a touch of luxury.

Enter this delightful cottage into a hallway from which leads a traditional, period sitting room furnished with Chesterfield settees, rugs, a Welsh dresser and some lovely landscape paintings. The centrepiece of the room is undoubtedly the fantastic open fire – perfect for chilly evenings! There is no shortage of entertainment, choose from, curl up with a good book from the library, listen to the radio, watch TV or simply crack open a bottle of wine and chat long into the night.

There’s a good size, farmhouse-style kitchen, with dining area. The ‘heart of the home’, it’s a lovely place to enjoy a full English breakfast or read the morning papers. Steps from the kitchen lead to the garden.

The house has been thoughtfully equipped and there’s even a windbreak for guests to use on the beach.

Upstairs, there are three characterful double bedrooms (one of which has a 4’ double bed), each with plenty of storage.

The house bathroom has a bath, separate shower, basin and WC.

Throw open the kitchen door to discover a beautiful walled garden with well-established borders containing shrubs, trees and flowers. There is nothing to disturb you but the sound of birdsong, so sit back and soak up the sunshine and fresh air. There’s a gas BBQ for casual al fresco dining.

Ruswarp is a charming village situated on the banks of the river Esk. The river is tidal to this point and seals swim up from the harbour and bask on the weir. This fascinating village has an iron bridge, a tall brick viaduct and an old mill. It boasts a great local inn and renowned traditional butchers with a deli – people swear by their pork pies!

Whitby is a five minute drive away and it is a pleasure to discover the town’s iconic Abbey, 199 steps, bustling harbour and, of course, sample award-winning fish and chips. There is a physically undemanding walk between Ruswarp and Whitby (approximately 1½ miles) mostly along a stone pannierway, known as Monks Trod. The fishing village of Sandsend is nearby and its sandy beach is a lovely spot for fossil hunting and rock pooling.

Make memories with your family and friends at this dreamy, period cottage – it is ideally situated for discovering North Yorkshire’s beautiful coastline.

The ancient fishing port of Whitby lies at the mouth of the River Esk and is ideally situated for exploring this beautiful part of Yorkshire, with its superb coastline and close proximity to the spectacular North York Moors.
