Tucked away down a quiet yard just off Whitby’s vibrant Flowergate, Hilda’s Hideaway is a truly unique and quirky retreat in the centre of town. Dating back to 1805, this charming three-storey cottage has been lovingly furnished with a mix of antique and modern pieces, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The walls are adorned with eclectic artwork collected by the owner from local galleries and talented friends, adding to its creative and homely feel.

Accessed via communal internal stairs, the first floor opens into a well-equipped kitchen with a table and benches, ideal for sociable meals. The bathroom is also on this level, featuring a shower over the bath. On the second floor, the lounge is a feast for the eyes, with cosy sofas, a second dining area, countless trinkets and an electric wood-burning stove. The top floor houses two beautifully styled bedrooms under the eaves, complete with dormer windows offering breathtaking views over the rooftops to Whitby Abbey and the sea beyond. Both rooms include built-in wardrobes and convenient in-room sinks. Please note, the stairs are steep and the bedrooms have low, sloping ceilings typical of a period property.

Whitby boasts a rich cultural and heritage tapestry deeply rooted in maritime history, literature, and folklore. Famous as the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which drew on the town’s dramatic cliffs and the Gothic abbey ruins, Whitby has embraced its literary legacy. This connection has given rise to the renowned Whitby Goth Weekend, plus the town boasts many other themed events including steam punk, pirates, folk music and northern soul.

Whitby’s heritage is reflected in its whaling and fishing history, traditional jet jewelry crafting, and picturesque old town, offering a unique blend of the historical and the imaginative.

Explore the cobbled streets of the old town, climb the famous 199 steps to the hauntingly beautiful Abbey ruins, or visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. With its sandy beach, working harbour, and fantastic seafood restaurants, Whitby is the perfect mix of heritage, culture, and seaside fun.
