The inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel Count Dracula, the ruins of Whitby Abbey can be reached by climbing the 199 steps from the old town. Whitby Harbour is steeped in history, and visitors can see where British explorer Captain James Cook first worked as an apprentice before setting sail and discovering Australia. In addition to the town’s fantastic mix of boutique shops, traditional stores, tea rooms and excellent restaurants, numerous festivals and fairs are held throughout the year. These include Whitby Folk Week, the Whitby Regatta, and the twice-yearly Whitby Goth Weekend.
