    About this property

This atmospheric holiday cottage in Polesworth is set over three floors and forms the larger side of the ancient Abbey Gatehouse. It oozes character and charm, with a spacious sitting room with a warming woodburner, antique furniture and a charming half tester double bed. Exposed beams, leaded windows and stone windowsills all add to the charm, whilst the contemporary furnishings make this Polesworth cottage first-class accommodation for family and friends all year round. "Father Philip is so kind and warm. The accommodation is always very clean. Again the internet was a problem. We were without internet for half of our 21 day stay. This did cause problems with work, but we did not let it spoil our stay. It would stop me from booking again though if not corrected."
    Mr Sherriff ‐ 1 Oct 2018
" Cottages were helpful, friendly and courteous, our greeting at Gatehouse Croft was warm and genuine. The property is simply stunning inside and out, it;s warm and cosy from the underfloor heating downstairs - so much so that we didn't light the fire even with overnight temperatures below freezing. The property is clean, tidy and well equipped, particularly in the kitchen which for someone like me who enjoys cooking is a real bonus. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gatehouse Croft and will most definitely be back on a future visit to the UK."

"I complained about the noise from the car park behind the property - cars doing doughnuts, very loud music. I was contacted by who said they had spoken to the owner and said he knew everyone and if it happened again to contact him. He came round the next day and said it had been a problem since last October. I felt wanted to get off the phone as soon as possible and didn’t appreciate this had ruined our holiday."
    Mrs Woods ‐ 1 Mar 2018
"Everything of good quality, cutlery, saucepans glasses etc Comfy bed and cosy woodburner - with logs! Warm welcome from Father Philip and lovely cake to welcome us with milk, tea bags etc. Dog friendly with blanket and bowls. Polesworth itself is not particularly attractive, but the two cottages that form part of the old abbey gatehouse are utterly delightful. There are lots of stairs if you are using the second floor bedroom, so suggest mobile adults and no tiny children. There is social club and a pub immediately opposite, which may have been a noise issue if we were using the second floor bedroom, but the main bedroom, on the first floor, is at the back of the cottage, so no problem on our stay. , as an agency are really helpful and friendly and this, too, makes for a lovely holiday!"
    Mrs Wilshaw ‐ 1 Mar 2018
"If you appreciate history, you will love Gatehouse Croft. It has been really well modernised inside, and I don't think there was anything which could be improved in terms of comfort, cleanliness or facilities. Our host, Father Philip, gave us a warm and generous welcome, and was on hand to help during the day when I couldn't turn the heating down! The only downside was outside noise. We had been prepared for noise from the pub and club opposite, but the real problem was the young men who frequented the car park area behind the property at night. We were subjected to handbrake turns in a car plus lots of shouting on our first night, then football and lots of shouting between 1am and 3am on our last night. We left early for this reason, such a shame as it is a lovely property."

"Father Philip was most helpful and really pleasant. We were without internet for two days. We will not ask for a refund on this occasion. However it did cause a couple of problems for us. I would like to request that you please stop sending me all the emails I receive from you. I have requested this already. Every time I enter your site I get emails. If I wish to book a property I will contact you. I found the staff at very pleasant but the constant emails are extremely off putting as a client."
    Mrs Villis ‐ 1 Dec 2017
"It has ALL the facilities you could possibly desire. The ground floor living space is expansive, and each of the bedrooms has its own small sitting area. We did experience some noise from the local pub and social club. However, this is specifically mentioned in the description of the accommodation, and it is worth this minor inconvenience to stay in such a lovely place."

"LIke something out of a period drama, like going back in time, beautiful, historic and comfortable."
    Mr Orgill
"Our "greeter" Father Phillip Wells was very pleasant and helpful. The setting was quite outstanding with the property containing a wealth of history. One slight confusion concerned some visitors reference (in the visitors book comments), to a "welcome pack" which we did not receive although this was not expected. We thought that "welcome packs" may be connected to possible religious groups booking the cottage. Otherwise a nice stay with very friendly people."

Mr Cliff Bowes, Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire
"The accommodation was of great historic interest. An old Abbey which had been refurbished in a wonderful, tasteful manner. The furnishings had been collected from good antique dealers and were superb in their settings. Although the bed was an old oak half tester it was wonderfully comfortable. It was a nice, quiet location in spite of the club and pub opposite. It was also very handy for the shops in Polesgate, and the shop just over the road had just about everything one would need. I am so glad we went there."
    Dr Wendy Fitzgibbon, London,
"This property was outstanding in every way. The restoration has been done to an excellent standard and with lovely detail. Great location for exploring the local area. A relaxing and beautiful place to stay. Highly recommended and we will certainly be returning."
Mrs Lisa Ashcroft, Wakefield, West Yorkshire
"We had a wonderful stay at Gatehouse Croft. It was a pleasure and an honour to stay in a property with such fantastic history, character and quirky features. I've never stayed in a more immaculately clean property. We will definitely be recommending to friends and family."
Mrs Lisa Ashcroft, Wakefield, West Yorkshire
"We had a wonderful stay at Gatehouse Croft.Everything from the friendly welcome was a pleasure and an honour to stay in this property. It had such a fantastic history, character and quirky features. My 4. Year old spent her time pretending to be in a castle. I've never stayed in a more immaculately clean property. It was spacious even with a child and a baby and all of the luggage we had to bring along.. Having said that the central location was good and proximity to shop and chippy excellent. Thanks again Father Wells and team. - We will definitely be recommending to friends and family."
Mr David Skinner, Llandysul, Sir Ceredigion
"We stayed at Gatehouse Croft for 2 nights in March and were very impressed by everything about it. It was very well equipped, warm and cosy. We would recommend it to other dog owners."
    Mr Les Hughes, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire
"Gatehouse Croft was well presented, spotlessly clean accommodation. We would highly recommend this property and look forward to returning again in the future."
    Mrs Christine Billington, Tamworth, Warwickshire
"Lovely cosy and comfortable dog friendly accommodation which was spotlessly clean. Great location with all amenities within easy walking distance."
Mr John Mark Davies, Stamford, Lincolnshire
"Gatehouse Croft was very comfortable, cosy and spotlessly clean. There were lots of little touches to make us feel welcome. The beds were very comfy which made the cottage a very relaxing place to stay. Surpassed our expectations."
    Mrs Gwyneth Waistell, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham
"Location perfect for two families to meet in the middle of the country. The cottage was lovely and comfortable. "
    Mrs Debbie Burunou, Bristol,
"The accommodation is outstanding. The restorations have been beautifully done. Every eventuality has been thought of and there were plenty of crockery, cooking equipment etc. It was outstanding and we will be back!"
    Ms Rebecca Clarke, Dubai, Dubai
"The cottage was everything we imagined and more. We loved that it was a traditional English cottage, in a beautiful setting and really felt like a home away from home."
    Mr Gerald Marshall, Watford, Hertfordshire
"Gatehouse Croft was an excellent place to stay; it was very spacious, well equipped and in a good position. Would highly recommend."
Miss Margaret Fletcher, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
"Possibly the best cottage we have stayed in. Had a great welcome and everything was exactly as stated. It was a fantastic restoration and had lovely sitting areas in the bedrooms. In a lovely welcoming village with plenty of places to eat & drink, and lots of places to walk the dog; park, woodland and canal. A great base for lots of places to visit, a visit to Bosworth Field was the highlight."
    Mr Nik Coultas, Truro,
"An outstanding cottage, perfect in every way."
Mr Bill Bailey, Chester Le Street,
"This cottage had atmosphere and charm in abundance. It was modern inside without losing any of its character. Presented in excellent condition by very friendly people."

"For our son, a professional jazz musician, Christmas 2014 was a busy period, with gigs up and down the country. As a result, he could not make it home to the Isle of Wight from his house in Leeds. We therefore decided to celebrate a 'delayed Christmas' in mid-January and, in order to share the travelling, we agreed to meet at Polesworth, which lies about half way between the two. We rented the Gatehouse Croft for the weekend and had the most wonderful stay. The house is probably the best-equipped rental accommodation in which we have ever stayed and we lacked for nothing. With its mixture of Mediaeval structure and modern facilities, it was extremely comfortable and, indeed, on the coldest night of the year [minus 4 C], we were as warm as toast, thanks to the log fire and the under-floor central heating. The whole place was spotless and beautifully presented and we received the friendliest of welcomes from the custodian, Father Philip, who gave excellent guidance on shopping, sightseeing and walks for out two Golden Retrievers: Sherlock and Mycroft. The village itself has a good range of shops, including a small Co-op supermarket and a superb 'old-fashioned' butcher's shop, selling first class local produce. There is a good fish and chip shop near by but the real find was the American Diner, just down the road, whose burgers and milkshakes were first class. We will certainly visit again!"

    Mrs Johnson, Cowes,
"We liked everything! The location, ambiance and overall very high standard of the property - not to mention the friendly welcome - made for a most enjoyable break. Despite fronting a fairly busy road and an equally popular path through the abbey grounds, Gatehouse Croft was extremely quiet and relaxing. The beds were comfortable and, on the coldest night of the year we were as warm as toast. All that and the local area provided superb walks for our Golden Retriever! We will certainly be back."
    Mr Mark Donald, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex
"The Gatehouse is a very interesting property with a long history. The refurbishment has been made to a very high standard and we found that it is better equipped than many of the other cottages we have stayed in over the past few years. It was also very well maintained and very clean. We were particularly impressed with the little touches such as fresh flowers, toiletries etc. We hope to return and will definitely recommend it to others."
    Mrs Heather Haynes, Peterborough,
"Beautiful. Very clean, a real home from home. Everyone was so friendly and very welcoming. Everything it promised and more. Our only regret was that we didn't stay longer. Well placed for days out and perfect for cosy nights in by the fire. Would highly recommend to anyone."
    Mrs Helen Mander, Northampton,
"The property was larger than expected and fitted out to a very high standard. It was very warm and cosy. There are plenty of amenities in the village and people were all very friendly."
    Mr Vincent Green, Bristol,
"We loved the location of Gatehouse Croft, walking along the tree lined lane to the lovely church. Everyone was very friendly as were the volunteers who run the Abbey tours. Lovely walks along the canals nearby. The property is beautiful and very homely."
    Mr Paul Bowman, Haltwhistle, Northumberland
"This is probably one of the best equipped and most beautiful buildings we have stayed in throughhout many years of holidays in the UK.The excellent accomodation was enhanced by the warm welcome and assistance offered by the Polesworth team. I do not beleive the accomodation or commitment could have been better."
Mr David Bennett, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear
"Everything was thought about to make our stay fabulous, the level of care and attention taken could not be bettered! The quality of the restoration of a unique building and the forethought put into designing the resulting space and furnishings was excellent. We will be back very soon."
    Mr Matthew Cass, Prenton,
"The cottage was lovely, lots of character and very well equipped."

"Living only a mile away from this property we have watched the scaffolding erected and builders come and go and read about the lottery funded restoration of Polesworth Abbey gatehouse, so with friends from Lincolnshire coming to visit for the week it was a perfect excuse to book the property as a base to introduce them to the area - and oh boy, are we glad we did. This is one of the most amazing properties it has been our privilege to stay in. Full of character and charm you could feel the history in every beam, wall and rafter whilst enjoying the modern day comfort of under floor heating, free Wi-Fi and dishwasher. The welcome from Fr. Philip and his flock made us proud to say we were locals and we were amazed at the discoveries we made about our own locality and heritage. Situated on the Warwickshire/Staffordshire/Leicestershire boarder the property is an ideal base for days out to Bosworth Battle Field, the National Memorial Arboretum Drayton Manor Theme Park, Twycross Zoo and many more attractions as well as been about 45 minutes from Birmingham or Nottingham in you require a serious shopping day, Theatres etc. It should be noted that there are steep stairs to the top floor where the twin room is situated which would be unsuitable for young children or the less mobile. We are so pleased that we decided to 'holiday at home' - it was just fantastic and a place we would certainly recommend and can't wait to return to."

The welcome received from the owner and the local people was fantastic; and the dog was well catered for. Very good base for exploring Warwickshire, Leicestershire and easy access to Birmingham and Nottingham if a City fix is required."
