Spending time outdoors in North Devon is a major pastime for locals and holidaymakers alike but if you don’t fancy venturing out you can enjoy the gorgeous private woodland which takes you alongside the riverbank or simply sit outside with a drink in hand enjoying the view. Bideford is the second largest town in North Devon with plenty to see and do with a lovely riverfront and port, which was once Britain’s third largest. Beaches, such as Westward Ho! and Instow are firm favourites locally and are less than 4 miles away and the South West Coastal Path is a must for keen walkers & runners as is the popular Tarka Trail, which stretches for 180 miles and can be accessed via the same side of the river. It provides the unique opportunity to follow a disused railway line by foot or bicycle, allowing you to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and river views and enjoy various treats along the way through Instow, Fremington Quay, and onto Barnstaple, North Devon’s historical regional centre.
Swimming, surfing, canoeing and entertainment for all the family plus fishing are all close by and the for a day with a difference why not take a trip across to Lundy Island? With regular trips from Bideford, you can enjoy the home to England’s first statutory Marine Nature Reserve, due to its unique flora and fauna. Measuring just 3 miles by ¾ mile, this entire island has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Westward Ho!, the nearest seaside village offers an array of seaside amenities including some fascinating curiosity shops and a range of restaurants and cafés. Beach 4 miles.

We had a wonderful week at the Riverside Apartments with our 2 dogs. Initially we were concerned as the primary living space appeared quite small but as the week progressed we became more comfortable and grew to like its compact size. When we arrived the apartment was lovely and clean and whilst we tried, I am sure it was not as clean when we left! The bedroom is a nice size, lots of hanging/storing space and the bed is comfortable although the proximity to the main road (busy) means there is significant noise. The shower is lovely, but we did get caught out (just once) when we showered at an irregular time (afternoon) and unfortunately used all the hot water so ended in a cold shower. There are some controls in the foot of the bedroom wall which appear to be without explanation. The kitchen is well appointed with some handy condiments and the milk and tea when we arrived was a God send (THANK YOU).Around the back the outdoor decking was a lovely place to eat al fresco and we enjoyed the BBQ twice. Out front there is a hosepipe to wash dogs down and we used it a lot!The apartment location is PERFECT. The Tarka Trail walk starts just quarter of a mile away and from there the world is your oyster. Later we drove to Puffing Billy and used that as our base for walks. The river Torridge is hypnotic and beautiful....each morning and evening we were delighted to watch the tides ebb and flow...NOTE - make sure you bring some dog towels to dry your hounds - NONE ARE PROVIDED and you will need them.Dogs are not allowed on any furniture including the bed (we were VERY happy with that as it is the same at our home). It would be nice to have some soft furnishings such as large cushions which can be placed on the floor so we could sit down there with the dogs and fuss them.We did not manage to bump into the hosts, even though they are just across the path, it felt rude to interrupt their day and as we had no issues and nothing was broken it would have been unnecessary. Likewise they did not interrupt us either. Overall it was a great venue, with a fabulous location, clean, well appointed and a marvellous river that made everything seem beautifully balanced and peaceful.

Overall a very good experience, the place is very relaxing although close to the main road.Watch the tide changing during the day inspires calm and tranquillity. I went alone with my three dogs and enjoyed every moment, lots of things to do. So many walks, trails, beach; we all enjoyed our week a Bideford.
