Guests say

Guests generally praise The Stables for its spaciousness, well-equipped kitchen, and beautiful location. The property is appreciated for its suitability for families and groups, offering a comfortable stay with a homely feel. Some guests have enjoyed thoughtful touches like a welcome pack. However, minor maintenance issues and suggestions for improvements have been noted.

Most guests found The Stables clean and well-maintained, though there were isolated reports of dirty towels, crockery, and a greasy oven tray. These seem to be exceptions rather than the rule, hence the score reflects generally good cleanliness with room for improvement.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and proximity to local attractions. Guests enjoyed the views and found it convenient for exploring East Devon and Dorset. The positive remarks about the location are consistent, indicating a high level of satisfaction.

Comfort is well-regarded with mentions of comfortable beds and underfloor heating. However, some guests found the mattresses too soft or in need of replacement, and the bench seating uncomfortable. The overall experience remains positive, but these points suggest there is room for enhancement in comfort.

Facilities are generally good, with a well-equipped kitchen and playroom for children. Criticisms include the need for more seating, a handrail for steps, and maintenance of loose slabs and lighting. While the facilities meet guests' needs, attention to these details could improve the score.

While some guests mentioned a welcome pack, there is not enough information to assess the consistency or quality of thoughtful gestures across all stays. As such, it is not possible to provide a score for thoughtfulness, but guests should note that such gestures, while appreciated, are not guaranteed.

A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the countryside around the village of Uplyme, on the border of Devon and Dorset is crisscrossed with bridleways and footpaths, notably the East Devon Way, and offers ideal country walks and breath-taking views. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, a television chef, chose the location for his River Cottage headquarters at Park Farm, where you may treat yourself to a fantastic lunch. You can reach Lyme Regis' breath-taking Jurassic Coast with a short drive. The charming harbour provides frequent fishing expeditions, or you may try your hand at fossil searching. Thank you for the Christmas tree! Just one (hopefully helpful) suggestion. Though there are two bins indoors for recycling and general waste I was advised to put everything in the green wheelie bin outside. Shouldn't there be two outside bins to separate the waste?

The accommodation was great, the location amazing, and so we would recommend to friend, with a couple of reservations. The first issue for us was that whilst there was underfloor heating, there was absolutely no ability for us to control this ourselves and the heat was extremely patchy. This is a first for us in any property we have ever stayed in. The weather was initially snow and ice and then the temperature jumped up over 10 degrees on the 3rd day. Whilst we completely accept that no one controls the weather, to not be able to adjust the heating according to our needs was extremely frustrating. We did phone the maintenance number a few times to ask them to adjust things but this was not ideal and certainly never communicated that we couldn't regulate the temperature of the property ourselves. Clearly in the summer this is unlikely to be an issue but in the winter we all felt it was important and certainly impacted our comfort. The facilities chap who did come to the property and bought extra radiators was prompt and helpful. Our second main point is that despite steep stone steps down to the front door and no handrail for support, there is no grit or salt box available to be able to minimise the slip hazard. We would have thought that particularly bearing in mind the logistics of entering the property and the snow and ice something would have been done about it. It was so dangerous. Again we contacted the maintenance team to ask for some salt or grit and someone did come but this was only after we had requested it. A salt box would be so easy to provide and would allow guests to ensure their own safety in such weather. Other more minor points which we all felt would have been helpful were; 1. A wall mirror in the twin bedroom (plenty of wall space for hanging one) 2. A second large frying pan. The property accommodates 8 people and one small pan is not sufficient. 3. Bigger bath towels, ones provided were very small. 4. Proper chairs rather than benches at the dining table. We should have picked up on this when we booked but benches are so uncomfortable for any period of time and we did spend a long time sitting at the table playing games. All points mentioned could be rectified with minimal cost impact. I would be happy to discuss any of our feedback further.

So much space. As soon as you walk through the door we loved it. It could do with some towel holders near the wash basins. The drive could do with some attention. We had a 4x4 which was fine. Our friends had a Mercedes sport which is low, they had to leave it at the top of the drive after getting stuck at the bottom. The finish is not very good. Too much gravel in places. Just a minor point. I know waterproof mattress protectors are needed, but they are very uncomfortable to sleep on. We went and bought a topper for the bed which improved sleeping mo end. We really enjoyed our stay apart from the above.
