Set back behind the three central arches, Sandown occupies pride of place in the courtyard of Bruern. This fine cottage was once a carriage house and to this day is full of character and charm of a bygone era.

As soon as you open the door you will be taken aback by the truly noble proportions of the large open-plan sitting room, dining room and kitchen with its high ceilings and decorative cornices.

The imposing symmetry of the doors and windows called for an equal elegance and sophistication in the decor which is evident throughout the cottage.

The main focal point is the fine antique pine mantelpiece which was once in Bruern Abbey, ensuring the cosiest place on a cold day is the club fender in front of a roaring open fire.

The kitchen area is well-equipped for even the keenest chef and has all the modern appliances needed to create everything from a light breakfast to a fine dining masterpiece.

The principle bedroom is on the ground floor and hosts a magnificent mahogany four-poster bed. In the en-suite bathroom you will find the pièce de resistance, a fine old marble-topped French washstand in pitch pine, brought over from Normandy.

Upstairs there is a further bedroom with two 3' four-poster beds, dressed in a blue-and-white print and an en-suite shower room with floor to ceiling marble tiles.

French doors lead from the drawing room and down a flight of stone stairs to the outside large terrace, with a wonderful view of the communal lawns and the long border of the walled garden. Rose and clematis covered trellises on both sides combine with beds full of viburnums, roses, phlox and lilies to give privacy for alfresco dining.

Sandown Cottage is part of Bruern Cottages. Bruern Cottages offer unlimited access to a communal games room, two spa treatment rooms (bookable via the Estate office), an indoor pool and a gym area for guests to use.

There are bicycles available to rent for the day, by the main office. Standard bicycles are free of charge and E-bikes are £30 per bike, per day.

There is an electric car charging point available to use on-site and it is free of charge. Please enquire at the Estate office.

Children must be supervised at all times when using the indoor swimming pool.

Sorry, children are not permitted in the gym.

A river runs through the estate and leads to a weir that is gated off. Please supervise children at all times.
