Snaptrip says

Gamekeepers Cottage in Northumberland receives praise for its peaceful location, spaciousness, and the warm welcome from caretakers. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, cosy log burners, and the enclosed garden for pets. While some guests mention cleanliness issues and maintenance needs, the majority reflect a comfortable and enjoyable stay, with the surrounding countryside and proximity to attractions adding to the charm.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Reviews are mixed regarding cleanliness. While many guests found the cottage comfortable and clean, there are notable mentions of dust, spiders, and a need for a deeper clean in some areas. This suggests room for improvement, although it does not seem to detract significantly from the overall experience.

The cottage's location is highly praised for its tranquillity and proximity to Northumberland attractions. Guests enjoy the quiet rural setting and find it central for exploring the county, with easy access to beaches and countryside.

Most guests find the cottage roomy, well-appointed, and comfortable, with cosy log burners and a home-like feel. However, some guests mention issues with draughts and the comfort of the mattresses, suggesting that while comfort is generally high, there is some variability.

Facilities are generally appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen and garden. However, there are several comments about maintenance issues such as the shower, heating, and draughts. These issues indicate that while the facilities meet needs, there is a necessity for attention and upgrades.

Guests mention a welcome box and the caretakers' helpfulness, indicating thoughtfulness in hospitality. However, as these extras are not consistently referenced and may not be guaranteed for every stay, the score reflects the positive but not universal experience.

About this property

Chatton 1.5 miles. One of four beautiful, stone-built cottages in the charming hamlet of Chillingham, just a stone's throw from Chillingham Castle and wild cattle park. This cottage, recently refurbished by its new owner is in a peaceful setting, with leafy roads and a babbling brook on the doorstep, and the imposing castle of Chillingham dominating the backdrop beyond. This cottage would be just the spot for a small family or perhaps as a cosy retreat for couples wanting a peaceful break. This lovely cottage has two good-sized bedrooms, a ground floor bathroom, kitchen, and a comfortable sitting room and separate dining room, both with woodburning stoves for those frosty nights. As a listed building, it has been sympathetically modified yet retains some original features such as a stripped wooden floor in the master bedroom. It is furnished with a blend of antique and good quality modern furniture in keeping with its historic status. To the front there is a shared garden area with furniture, and to the rear is a further garden; the ideal spot to relax at the end of a long day exploring. This holiday home is surrounded by numerous forest walks and cycle tracks, the Heritage Coast is just ten miles to the east with its sandy beaches and many castles, including Holy Island, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick and Warkworth, plus Alnwick Gardens is a very popular attraction, and well worth a visit. Just ten miles west, the imposing Cheviot Hills can be clearly seen in the distance, a must for avid walkers and cyclists. This pretty cottage is a perfect base for exploring Northumberland and all it has to offer.

The village of Chatton is set amongst scenic countryside and offers stone built houses, a small village green, Post Office, an art gallery and a pub. Close by is Alnwick Gardens, the Northumberland National Park and the Heritage Coastline.

Set I a perfect area of Northumberland we visited Bamburgh beach ( The Potted Lobster is divine),Alnwick,Cragside Country Park which is stunning and enjoyed the cosy cottage. The log burners were perfect with plenty of logs to keep us warm, thanks to Caretaker Ken for helping us get fire started!. Lovely new bathroom too. Was lovely so see the house decorated for Christmas too. We would definitely love to return to this hidden gem.

Ken and Margaret next door are warm and welcoming and took excellent care of us during our stay. This is a traditional rural cottage with wooden window panes and doors which warp slightly with the weather allowing spiders to enter - it’s part of country living so if you can live with that then this is definitely the place for you! Lots to do on the doorstep with Chillingham Castle and the wild cattle park and excellently situated for exploring Northumberland - only 15 minutes away from the beautiful town and beach of Bamburgh
