About this property

Iona is a stunning three-storey period townhouse located in the quiet, old historic part of Berwick within the Elizabethan Walled Defences. It boasts many original features and has been furnished to a high standard with a mix of antique and contemporary furniture. The property is an ideal base for families, friends, ramblers, golfers and cyclists to explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Beauty with many places of interest including Bamburgh, Alnwick and Lindisfarne. Off the entrance hall there is a large dining room with a dual-aspect bay window giving the room a light and airy feel. There is also a comfortable sofa and armchair to watch TV or sit and chat. The large, beautiful kitchen is extremely well-equipped and features sleek granite worktops and a solid oak central island with Butler sink and breakfast bar with stools. The modern shower room off the hallway features a walk-in shower cubicle. The striking staircase leads you to the bathroom which includes a shower over the bath. The sitting room boasts a stunning bay window looking over a small green and the old historic Governor’s house. The room itself has the original exposed polished floor boards as well as beautiful roman blinds and curtains made by a local interior designer. There is also a large master bedroom with a king-sized bed and a double bedroom, both with original sash windows. Both bedrooms, and the double bedroom on the second floor, are fitted with luxury pillow top mattresses for extra comfort. The staircase leads you to the second floor, here you will find a large double bedroom with an antique hexagonal table and stools set into the bay window. There is also a delightful twin room with two bay windows giving views over the small green opposite and the surrounding historic buildings. Iona is close to the magnificent Elizabethan walls over which you look onto the river estuary and sea. A further stroll around the Walls will take you onto the quayside of the River Tweed where you can sit at the Lowry café and enjoy the views. There is a myriad of charming shops, restaurants and art galleries dotted throughout the little streets of Berwick. A characterful cottage in an ideal location for exploring this astounding Northumberland location.

Importantly, Iona is within easy walking distance of the railway station. A brisk walk to the station will be around 10 to 15 mins however if one is carrying suitcases it would be advisable to get a taxi. The cities of Edinburgh and Newcastle are around 40mins travelling time by train.

There are 4 local beaches around Berwick, 2 of which are in walking distance in Berwick and 2 are in Spittal which is best accessed by car (3-4 mins) or local bus. There is a lovely promenade at Spittal and seaside features for children.

Safety:

Mains operated smoke/fire detectors are installed in property.

Berwick is England’s most northerly town and changed hands 13 times whilst the English and the Scots fought for around 400 years for control of the Borders! The history is delightfully shown in the town’s museum. Nowadays this small coastal town retains much of its charm, with quaint narrow streets enclosed within great Elizabethan walls, fortified with bastions, built against attacks in the 1500s and walks along these offer spectacular views over the coast and river estuary to Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island.

The place is spotlessly clean, comfortable and has everything you need. The area is really quiet and is only 100 yards from the walls on the mouth of the river tweed. If we come back to berwick, and I'm sure we will, we will definitely look to come back to this wonderful property

It is set in the old quarter of Berwick, an unspoilt quiet spot just steps away from the wall walk, from where we could see the Northern Lights. The interior decor is good. It's cosy and there's everything you need for a week's stay. There's a permit for parking and plenty of free car parks in the vicinity. The owners make every effort to please. We had no problems finding a range of activities, from walking at St Abb's Head (where we saw a beach of seals!), visiting local cultural venues, visiting the Tapestry of Scotland to taking a train into Edinburgh for exhibitions.

We loved it. It was quiet, comfortable and spotless. Everything was absolutely first -rate. So much thought had obviously gone in to providing top quality accommodation. We had a wonderful week exploring Berwick and its environs and would love to return. Thank you Peter and Maureen.
