Guests say

Cowdber Barn is a spacious and comfortable cottage surrounded by beautiful countryside, ideal for family gatherings and those seeking peace and quiet. Guests appreciate the warm atmosphere, quality bedding, and the games room. The location is remote, offering tranquillity and outdoor activities, with a local pub nearby serving quality food.

Cleanliness is generally satisfactory with spotless linen and living areas. However, some guests noted the need for a deeper clean in the kitchen and less accessible areas, with occasional cobwebs and dust.

The barn's remote location is highly praised for its tranquillity and proximity to outdoor activities, though the access track is noted to be rough. The peaceful setting and nearby attractions like the Devil's Bridge and White Scar caves are highlights.

The barn offers comfortable sofas and beds, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Some guests found the furniture dated, but overall the property provides a cosy and homely environment.

Facilities like the games room are well-received, but there are comments on the need for maintenance and updates, particularly in the kitchen and bathrooms. The property is equipped for large groups, but some cooking appliances are outdated.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts, so it is not possible to provide a score in this category.

Ingenious design has retained the barn’s unique character, while creating very spacious and well-equipped accommodation, ideal for holidays at any time of year. Set away from the farmyard, it is surrounded by farmland where sheep and cows quietly graze. There are wonderful walks straight from the door, with the fells and mighty Ingleborough in sight. At Ingleton (6 miles), there are miles of paths with steps and bridges along a wooded valley where waterfalls abound, and nearby White Scar Caves display classic features of limestone caverns. The very pretty market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is just 4 miles away, offering shops, inns, restaurants and a golf course.

Cowder Barn is ideally located between two National Parks – the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District – both within easy touring distance and offering some of England’s most dramatic scenery. Rushing rivers flow down the main dales of Wensleydale, Swaledale and Wharfedale, surrounded by the high peaks of the Pennines, and high waterfalls, such as Hardraw Force near Hawes, make spectacular sights. Everywhere grey-stone villages blend effortlessly into an unspoilt landscape. The Lakes offer a land of exciting contrasts – high mountains and deep lakes in an ever-changing array of colours. Fishing and water sports can be enjoyed, or for the less energetic, sheepdog trials, Cumberland wrestling and fell races make good spectator sports. The coast is easily accessible, with the wide sandy beach at Morecambe only 16 miles away. Shops 4 miles, pub 1 mile.

We have been to Cowdber Barn several times and have seen it improve over the years. It is huge with plenty of space for everyone, it is comfortable and homely. On our recent stay it was always lovely and warm with lots of lovely new bedding and towels, and nice and clean. The only downside this time was the flooding on the farm track leading to the barn, which made it a bit tricky, especially if you are in a normal car and not an SUV. But excellent value for money as always. Thank you, we will be back!

The road up to the barn was little more than a dirt track full of pot holes and boulders, very mucky and we had a dry week. We loved the location of Cowdber Barn and the quirky features however, first impressions on arrival was that it was not clean. Rubbish from previous guests still lying and cigarette doubts still in outdoor bowls. The furniture is very dated and had lots of stains. The games room was a great space but we were unable to use fully due to it being so cold up there despite lighting the log burner and one electric heater switched on. Kitchen was fully equipped however, very dated and the single electric oven and hob was not suitable to cook for larger groups. Bathrooms and bedding were clean but the en suite shower was mouldy and smells coming from drain. This was an old Mira shower which I remember from the 80’s and had no pressure. Carpets were stained and the one in the lounge had a burn covered by a rug. This property could be stunning if upgraded but as it stands it is not worth what we paid for the New Year week

As a family we have been coming here over 11 years. Our kids have so many Christmas memories here and genuinely love it! It’s spacious and full of character, and location is so peaceful. The games room is fabulous! The only gripe we have is that the cooking equipment is no where near able to cope with cooking for the amount of people the cottage holds. The cooker is absolutely ANCIENT, it takes forever to cook anything so a Christmas dinner is out of the question. We are obviously aware of this so bring a couple of slow cookers and air fryers etc but this really desperately needs updating. We have already booked next year at another cottage with a better working cooker, at over 1k cheaper. When we first booked cowdber at Xmas all those years ago it was 800 for the week and though we really do love it there as it’s gradually increased in price (this year was 2400) we would really expect a little bit of money to be put into the property in terms of a better cooker. Like I said it’s not a massive deal as we know in advance and we love the space and character of the place but for the increased price we can’t justify having to bring slow cookers and cook dinner in batches. If the cooking situation was sorted we would continue to return for our Christmases for many more years.
