About this property

Eglingham 4.4 miles. Dating back to the 19th century, The Bolthole is a converted farm building which is set in simply stunning countryside close to the rural village of Eglingham in Northumberland. Perfect for a family holiday, the property offers beautifully presented accommodation bursting with character. Inviting guests in straight away, the sitting room is incredibly welcoming with solid wood flooring, walls decorated in warm hues, tasteful rugs and soft throws and a feature inglenook fireplace; the perfect room for curling up and chilling out. Step into the impressive kitchen/diner which is cool and contemporary with a fully fitted kitchen and a chic dining area where you can imagine pulling up a chair and tucking into long, lazy meals together. Pull up a stool at the breakfast bar, pour yourself a glass of your favourite tipple and keep the designated chef company. If the sun is shining, there are plenty of alfresco options including a sunny decking area and gardens boasting breath-taking countryside views. Come bedtime and guests can choose from two well-presented bedrooms. Both are equally attractive with exposed ceiling beams and picture windows, helping to create a relaxing ambience. After a quick dip in the shower or a relaxing soak in the bath, you’re ready to get out and about exploring. The town of Alnwick is nearby and is dominated by its stunning castle and gardens which boasts Europe’s largest cascading water feature. The castle’s other claim to fame is that it was the setting for Hogwarts School as featured in the Harry Potter films. The town also has a good selection of shops and amenities as well as miles of beaches to explore. Nearby coastal towns worth visiting include Alnmouth, Seahouses, Warkworth and Beadnell with trips to Farne Islands popular where you can look out for unusual birds and even seals. Other attractions include Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland Country Zoo and Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery. The Bolthole does exactly what it says on the tin: offers guests a beautifully curated bolthole in stunning rural surroundings.

The pretty village of Eglingham sits on a country road between Alnwick and Chillingham, and with its stone houses, lovely gardens, stream and wooded areas, it makes a lovely spot to visit. There is a fine Victorian church in the village, a large pub and also a good restaurant. The surroundings are ideal for those wishing to get away from it all – you may see the heron grace the Eglingham burn, or just relax and take in the views and incredibly wide skies of the area. Within easy reach are the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, the castles at Dunstanburgh, Warkworth, Chillingham and of course Alnwick, with its spectacular Garden next door.

It is comfortable, warm and has everything you need for a relaxing stay. It is located fairly centrally for all the areas and places in Northumberland that we like to see. The views from the cottage are lovely, especially on a bright, sunny morning. We’ve stayed there four times and is always where we look to book first when we’re planning another journey to the area

Generally well equipped, very clean, roomy with loads of nice design features. Fantastic countryside location and view, feels remote but actually only a couple of miles from main road (but trips to Alnwick & coast do need some cross-country driving...Sat-nav to Alnwick took us through a ford that is best avoided after rain!). A few points to note...Wifi was very slow (streaming isn't an option here) and some upkeep is needed (loose cupboard handles, toaster handle broken, missing light bulbs). But still had a good time and would stay again!

It provides comfortable accommodation with all the usual facilities - washing machine, dishwasher, microwave and cooker etc. The kitchen door handles seem a bit loose and wobbly so need attention. You are aware about the uneven floor. The grill pan had to be cleaned before I could use it, but the grid came up a lot better in the dishwasher. The washing machine door was rather mouldy. Small points to be addressed. The long drive was very potholed.
