The village’s sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic fortress - Bamburgh Castle - make Bamburgh one of Northumberland’s major visitor attractions. The castle can be seen for miles and dominates this part of the county’s coastline. Today it remains home to the family of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public on a daily basis. Although overshadowed by the great castle, Bamburgh village is picturesque with neat grey stone cottages facing a manicured village green. There are excellent pubs, hotels with restaurants and a small selection of village shops. There are golf courses in Bamburgh and nearby Seahouses, and within easy reach are more wide sandy beaches, lovely fishing villages, stunning castles and coastal islands to explore along the dramatic Heritage Coast. There are numerous other attractions also a short drive away, including the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the historic walled border town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A superb base for exploring Northumberland.

Unfortunately, it had been very cold before we stayed at the cottage and we had cold weather during our stay. We found the heating provided was not adequate. The kitchen and living area had one heater, but it was such a large open area that it was cold which was most unfortunate because we would have liked to have used this lovely light room looking out over the bay. We did have a ready supply of cut logs and coal for the fire in the small sitting room. The bathroom had a great shower, but we found due to the very cold weather that even with the electric towel rail radiator on it did not get warm enough. On reflection we felt it would have been better to visit in the summer.

I was wrong, it's a lovely house. Yes there's no central heating and we took a couple of fan heaters which we used intermittently. The real fire in the lounge was great (someone had set it up for us so one match and a short wait led to a perfectly hot fire thankyou). The kitchen is well appointed and we wanted for nothing. Location fabulous, 2 minutes to the beach for dog walks and evening aurora photos, shots ride to Banbugh and seahouses. Very clean and smelling fresh when we arrived. Without the fan heaters there would have been some chillness to the place and we did descale the kettle and coffee maker but no complaints whatsoever. We would return happily.

Not having any central heating didnât bother us, the storage heater in the front room works well enough and the open fire made it very cosy. However itâs a shame we were having to boil any water before it was drinkable. The kettle was so full of limescale that the water was very gritty. The shower has very little pressure and only runs very very hot. Also thought 1 toilet roll and 1 bin liner for 4 people for a full week was a bit stingy. Other than that we had a lovely time walking on the beach and exploring the surrounding areas.
