About this property

Kearton Lodge is a stylish self-catering retreat for two just a ten-minute walk from the village pub and barely two miles from the shops, cafes and other amenities of Barnard Castle. Rebuilt with care and eco-friendly touches, this light, airy holiday rental in County Durham captures the beauty of the Dales with its open views, private patio and relaxed contemporary feel. Wander through landscaped gardens with a unique Stonehenge-style feature or arrange a private viewing of the owner's vintage steam and tractor collection. Perfect for couples craving comfort, scenery and unhurried days exploring Teesdale, the North Pennines and the timeless towns of the North East.

Kearton Lodge combines sweeping views of Teesdale with the comfort of a refined country holiday rental. Just a ten-minute walk—or half a mile—from the village pub (the Pinfold Club) and moments from Barnard Castle. South-facing and set within the grounds of East Roods, the owners rebuilt this first-floor retreat with craftsmanship and care, blending oak, granite, and soft light to create a space that feels instantly serene. Inside, neutral tones and handmade blinds frame sash windows overlooking the open Dales; outside, lawns unfold towards a quirky Stonehenge-style feature, with farmland and big skies all around. Guests can also, by arrangement, explore the owners' private collection of vintage steam engines and tractors—a one-off glimpse into local history.

Barnard Castle, affectionately known as "Barney," is a town made for slow exploration—its cobbled streets lined with galleries, antique shops, and cosy cafés. Visit the elegant Bowes Museum, picnic by the River Tees, or linger over drinks before wandering home beneath wide County Durham skies.

Teesdale rolls away in every direction, a landscape of soft hills, deep gorges and restless water. One day might take you to Richmond’s cobbled square or along a windswept ridge in the North Pennines; another to the calm folds of the Dales or the echoing cloisters of Durham Cathedral. Days unfold easily here, shaped by weather and whim, with beauty that shifts as the light changes. And when you come back through the gates at East Roods, past the lawns and the view that first stopped you in your tracks, it feels like closing the door on the world for a while.
