Guests say

The Stables in Millom is a well-received holiday cottage, praised for its beautiful setting, cleanliness, and well-equipped facilities. Guests appreciate the comfortable furnishings, the thoughtful welcome gifts, and the property's suitability for nature lovers and walkers. While some guests mention issues with noise from upstairs and maintenance concerns, the overall sentiment is positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Most guests found The Stables to be spotlessly clean, with high standards of cleanliness throughout. However, one review mentioned cleaning issues in the bathroom, which slightly impacts the overall score.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and proximity to walking areas and small towns. It is described as peaceful and ideal for nature lovers, although one review mentioned difficulty with mobile signal.

Guests generally found the beds and seating very comfortable, and the cottage cosy, especially in cold weather. However, some guests experienced noise disturbances from upstairs and mentioned uncomfortable seating arrangements.

The facilities are described as modern and well-equipped, with a special mention of the kitchen appliances. However, there are several maintenance issues raised, such as problems with the heating, a bumpy access lane, and a need for better water pressure in the shower.

The hosts are commended for their thoughtfulness, providing welcome gifts such as wine, snacks, and fresh eggs. It should be noted that while these gestures are greatly appreciated, such gifts may not be guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

Broughton-In-Furness 2.6 miles.Tucked away on the outskirts of Thwaites near Broughton-In-Furness in Cumbria, is this wonderful two-bedroom stable conversion, The Stables. Enjoying a superb location within the Lake District National Park, next to the owner’s home, and characterful features throughout, including original woodwork and stalls, The Stables is perfect for a couple or family of four who are looking to add a touch of character to their escape to the Lakes. Be welcomed into the inviting sitting room, where you can relax in the warmth of the electric fire as your favourite show plays out on the TV. Rustle up mouth-watering meals in the fully-equipped kitchen, with handy dishwasher and washing machine, ready to enjoy at the dining table for four.

If the weather is nice, why not fire up the barbecue and dine alfresco on your private decking? Wash away the day with a soothing soak in the bath or refreshing rinse in the shower, before whipping up a hot chocolate before bed. As your eyes grow heavy, retire to one of two well-presented bedrooms, a king-size and a bunk room which has a historic feature of a ladder formerly used to access the hayloft. After savouring your morning coffee out in the garden, take advantage of the footpath that runs through it, leading towards Duddon Valley and Black Combe. For your amenities, head over to Broughton-In-Furness, where you can indulge in a traditional pub lunch at the Old Kings Head or the 18th-century Black Cock Inn in front of a crackling woodburning stove.

The bustling town also offers a newsagent, petrol station and second-hand bookshop. Continue onto Milom which rests along the coast, where you can spend a day bathing on the beach, wandering up the Hodbarrow Haverigg Lighthouse or soaking up the wildlife-rich surroundings of the RSPB Hodbarrow. Venture further into the Lake District National Park, where you will find Coniston Water, where you can take to the waters by kayak, canoe or paddle board or if you want to simply sit back and soak up the views, enjoy a National Trust Steam Yacht Gondola. Other attractions include The Ruskin Museum and Brantwood.

A trip to the Lakes would not be complete without a visit to Windermere, where you can take in the exceptional views from Queen Adelaide’s Hill or Orrest Head, visit The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, or embark on a treetop trek at Treetop Lake District. All this awaits with a stay at The Stables.

Broughton-in-Furness, which dates back to the 11th century, is located in the south western region of the Lake District, about six miles from Coniston Water. A charming, cobbled area, complete with a magnificent horse chestnut tree, is surrounded by stores, taverns, and homes, many of which are Georgian in design. The village is an excellent location for a walking or climbing holiday, with plenty of opportunities to explore the Duddon Valley's rough splendour as well as the gentler Lake District fells.

Excellent spacious accommodation. Ideal for a holiday any time of the year. Cosy lounge with two heaters to keep you warm on a chilly winter night. Easy to use appliances in the kitchen. A great fusion of old and new. Don’t expect an invigorating shower though as the water pressure is low. Ideal for a family or couple. Good too for someone with limited mobility. I took my sister who walks with the aid of a frame. Owners left a welcome gift of wine and chocolate and were kind enough to bring us candles and torches in case we had a blackout during Storm Eowyn, which we did! Lots of places to visit in the area although some attractions are closed in the winter. Nature reserve at Millom and a good pub in the square. Walk along the old railway at Broughton-In-Furness then visit the pub in the square with open fire to warm yourself. Swinside Stone Circle nearby. Limited parking on narrow lane near the entrance of the farm track that you have to walk up to access the site. All in all The Stables is the ideal all year round base for walking the quiet southwestern fells, cycling and scenic driving.

Cottage is cosy and is an excellent base for nature lovers and anyone wanting some peace and quiet -views and walks from the door shared only with Herdwick sheep. We were blessed with enough good weather for some stunning walks in the area- highlights being Black Coombe, Duddon Valley and sunsets on the sandy shores of the Irish Sea. Another treat was spotting a red squirrel scampering in front of our on our drive to Wast Water. Can’t control weather- it is Cumbria - but highly recommend as the cottage has everything you need to relax including digital appliances to make light work of chores. Thank you for opening The Stables to us- very apt for the week before Xmas :) (PS if -like us- you’re concerned with negative reviews about showering -be assured:: my partner used the shower, i however preferred the bath: water is hot and plentiful -perfect for hikers’ tired feet and muscles
