Yan Yak is a Grade II listed character holiday cottage in High Lorton sleeping two, which was once part of the original 1828 Jennings Brewery. This romantic Lake District retreat features original sandstone floors, a wood burner, super-king bed, bike storage with power and lighting, and a private courtyard garden. The cottage’s name comes from the Cumbrian dialect meaning "One Oak", likely from nearby oak trees. You're in a peaceful village with the Whitbeck stream flowing past, the village shop sell groceries and serving coffee a few minutes walk away, and a local pub within a short stroll. This self-catering holiday cottage is in a superb location for walking and cycling as it puts Buttermere, Crummock Water, and the Whinlatter Pass right on your doorstep.
Yan Yak Cottage had a rich history built as part of a brewery in High Lorton where the Jennings family brewed ales in the early 1800’s before their success made them move into larger premises in Cockermouth in 1848. The brewery is still in operation and does tours, finishing off in the taproom where you can sample their wonderful ales. As a Grade II listed building, the name Yan Yak comes from the old Cumbrian dialect, meaning "One Oak", which local lore says refers to the nearby oak trees.
Inside, there are original features like sandstone floors, sash windows and brace and ledger doors. The wood burning stove makes your stay cosier on the cooler nights. The super-king bed is comfortable and spacious, and the bedroom and bathroom has plenty of storage with the bathroom having a shower over bath. The has a lounge 40-inch Smart TV with a Bluetooth soundbar and DVD player. There’s also excellent Wi-Fi coverage throughout the cottage.
The village shop is just a short walk away and sells a selection of local produce, groceries, etc, but also serves teas and coffee and an array of local crafts, while the Wheatsheaf Inn is a ten minute walk serves meals and local beers.
High Lorton is a bit further west than the usual Lake District tourist destinations and is really worth going that extra mile or two. The Whitbeck flows through High Lorton and alongside the village hall gardens, which are open to everyone. There’s plenty for fell walkers in the area but for the less energetic, you can enjoy walks from the cottage door. The Lorton Vale stretches from Loweswater, with the river Cocker winding its way through the valley and dry stone walls marking field boundaries. The Lorton Valley, is also the gateway to three of the Lake District lakes starting with Loweswater, on to Crummock Water before arriving at the wonderful Buttermere, some of the best scenery in the Lake District and some of Alfred Wainwrights favourite views from the famous peaks around the valley.
Whinlatter Pass rises nearby and will take you to Keswick. On the pass there’s the Whinlatter visitors centre which offers facilities for both serious and novice cyclists which takes you through the forest trails. There’s plenty of walking trails and access onto the fells and there’s also Go Ape and Segway hire. Whinlatter pass is also home to The Cottage In The Wood which proudly holds a Michelin star. Booking in advance is recommended as it’s very popular.
Eight minutes away in Cockermouth is Wordsworth House, Wordsworth's birthplace. There are also shops you'd expect from a handsome Georgian market town. Keswick lies 15 minutes from Whinlatter, boasting a bustling centre, Derwent Water cruises, and the Theatre by the Lake. The Lakes Distillery at Bassenthwaite makes spirits from Lakes water if you fancy something different to your usual gin. Mirehouse & Gardens has impressive literary connections, and Bassenthwaite Lake attracts ospreys in summer. Staying at Yan Yak offers peaceful village life with the Western Lakes' magnificent scenery mere minutes away.
