I have stayed at the Bull Pen twice now and each time was a delight and thoroughly enjoyed the home made scones, jam and cream left for us by the owner, Helen. The property is beautiful, very well maintained, very clean with a lovely, peaceful garden area, which even in November I was able to sit out in and read a book and listen to the birds. The cosy log fire was perfect after a stroll in the surrounding countryside. The kitchen is fully equipped. There is a petrol station a very short distance away which has a good stock of food items and the towns of Mistley and Manningtree with their independent shops and cafes/restaurants is only a short drive.

Lots of useful information sent to us before our holiday. It was easy to access the property which was set in lovely surroundings and was perfect for our short stay. Well equipped and spotlessly clean! Some lovely walks close by and plenty of recommended eating places a short drive away. Norfolk

If peace and quiet is what you are after this is the place for you! The Bull Pen has been furbished to an excellent standard and has lots of quirky features to make it feel homely. The property is situated close to the owners - but you would never know, because of the clever use of hedging and shrubs which gives pretty much total privacy. There are lots of places within easy striking distance by car, and we noticed a number of walkers rambling on the pubic footpaths, which run straight from the door, if you want to explore locally on foot.We even went to the Mercury theatre in Colchester, and were back 'home' within an easy 30 minutes of leaving at the end of the show.Seaside within 40 - 45 minutes depending on which resort you head for; Colchester 15 - 20 minutes. Flatford Mill - made famous in a painting by Constable - 15 minutes. Helen was always on hand if needed, but was never intrusive.
