The traditional village of Steeton lies in the Aire Valley, near the River Aire and the Leeds to Liverpool canal, just six miles south of Skipton. The village's 17th century heritage is still visible in some of the buildings, with an even greater number remaining from Steeton’s heyday as a 19th century handloom weaving and lead mining centre. The village has a small park, one pub, a corner shop, breakfast-brunch cafe, Cantonese takeaway and is within walking distance of Cross Hills, where a number of old pubs, shops and good restaurants can be found. The nearby mainline railway station has good links to Leeds, Bradford, Skipton and the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line. Nearby Skipton, known as The Gateway to the Dales, has an ancient castle, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. Enjoy a canal trip on a traditional barge or visit the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, which has regular steam train excursions during the weekend. Follow this with a trip on the Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway to Haworth and visit the famous Bronte Parsonage.
