There is also a weekly farmers market that provides local produce, arts, crafts, food and drink, and several boutique and gift shops that are scattered throughout the town. At the end of Galgate is Scar Top and the ruins of the stone castle date back to 1125 and gives the town its name. The castle also overlooks the River Tees and offers magnificent views over the surrounding areas. A little further afield but still within only a few miles distance, guests will find the pretty picture-postcard village of Staindrop, which is set in a dedicated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is definitely worth the short trip out to visit. Perfect for walkers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts, Barnard Castle is set amongst some of the most magnificent countryside that the county has to offer. There are many public footpaths, established walks and cycle paths that lead through the town, alongside the River Tees and out into rolling countryside and beyond, towards places and attractions including Binchester Roman Fort and Raby Castle, as well as many National Trust houses and sites. The cathedral city of Durham is only a 30-minute drive away and is perfect for guests wanting to include a theatre break into their stay, a romantic boat ride along the River Wear, a meal out in one of the bistros and restaurants, boutique shopping or the opportunity to visit the famous cathedral and Durham Castle, which is steeped in history and tradition. Durham is a city that is thriving all year round and offers free on street entertainment on a regular basis including the annual book week, Lumiere Festival, jazz festival, art festival, miners gala and many more. For those wanting to travel a little further afield, guests will find all the majesty and beauty of both High Force and Low Force waterfalls or be able to explore the Durham Dales, Pennines and even the northern counties of Northumberland and Cumbria all within an easy 2-hour drive. Any of the properties can be booked together for larger groups. There is also a public car park to the rear of the propertie

"Great location and lovely apartment but paintwork shabby, rusty pans and oven didn’t seem to reach temperature. It would also benefit from a dishwasher, table lamps and full size freezer but had an enjoyable stay"
    Findlay ‐ 20 Sep 2019
"Excellent accommodation. The little extras really made the difference. Very well equiped."
    Margaret ‐ 5 May 2019
"The property is comfortable & close to the town centre. The on-site staff were welcoming & friendly. My only negative comments are that the lounge is rather spartan, a few table lamps and pictures on the walls would make it more welcoming and the double-bedded room could do with a bedside table and lamp. There was no wi-fi, which one would expect be provided these days. Hence my low score of 6 for comfort."

"Lovely little apartment - everything you need for a short break and the kiddies loved the diwnstairs bedrooms. Kitchen very well equipped. Perfect location with a very short walk to shops, cafes, bars and takeaways with all you need. Would definitely go back."
    Laurie ‐ 4 Dec 2018
"Overall very good. The property was fairly clean but could do with more of a thorough clean - a bit of dirt in the corners, little bits or rubbish in draws, a line of grime in the bathroom sink. That was my only complaint, otherwise it was a great place to stay."
    Hayley ‐ 23 Oct 2018
"Absolutely lovely cottage, couldn't have asked for more. Location perfect as just 2 mins walk from the centre of town and yet lovely and quiet. The cottage was spotless too. Would definitely stay there again and might go with the 'girls' next time rather than the family as the pubs in Barnard Castle were fantastic too! Loads to do and see including the amazing Bowes Museum, the Castle and walks along the river."
