What our customers say about their holidays

    • Rainer - Verified booking

Japonica Cottage is a small terraced house right on the relatively busy High Street in Bourton on the Water.

The location of the cottage is great for going into the little town or to its one super market. Unfortunately, the road is quite noisy between 7am and 10pm minimum, and as the small living room and the bedrooms are only about 2 yards away from passing traffic, you feel constantly that some of this traffic is going right through the house as the old single-glazing original windows do not insulate you from the noise. We were very surprised that none of the reviews had mentioned this clearly, so were hoping for a quiet road. The bed was comfortable and the television worked fine. The kitchen is simple and small but well enough equipped for two people. The bathroom shower could benefit from a shower curtain over the bath, but warm water and heating was all fine. The stairs are a tribute to the inventive- and resourcefulness of the people who built the small house. A bonus is the parking right behind the house, just make sure your car does not exceed the size of a Volkswagen Golf in width. We found the narrow driveway perfectly fine to negotiate and had more problems with the lack of lighting in the car-port area (the small yard is lit). The shared washing-machine and dryer worked fine for us and in warmer weather sitting in the yard could well have been a bonus. The add-on veranda is essential if you want to be somewhere quiet during the day so kudos to the owners for having invested in this. We would definitely recommend investing in two new 2-seaters, the current ones are the worst ones we have come across so far in 20 years of renting cottages. Ideal would be something with fold down arm-rests as this would allow you to relax a bit in the small living room.

I thought the location of the property was great .

I liked the look and style and found the bed to be very comfortable. I was disappointed when I turned up at the cottage and saw the front courtyard was not dog friendly as it was not enclosed and there was no back garden to let them out safely . I think if a property is described as dog friendly it should be just that not “dogs tolerated “ which is what I felt Bobble cottage was. The rules about the dogs not being allowed upstairs or on furniture was a bit much . Then there should be a stair gate to stop them going up there then . I think the property could do with a make over as it was a little tired. The oven needs replacing ( I had to call the office so they could send the maintenance man out twice ). On my first night of arrival I was hungry and looked forward to cooking my dinner and when I realised the oven wasn’t working I was again disappointed. The residential neighbours asked me to park further back from the steps . I’d remembered the first time but had forgotten . We got chatting and they were clearly unhappy with the cottage being holiday let . The parking was a problem as it IS too narrow for most cars. I wasn’t able to open either of my doors to unload one time when I parked there. I had two small dogs with me and it was very annoying. I think if the things I’ve mentioned were addressed it would be more worth the money it costs to stay there . As it stands it’s not. I stay in a lot of air b & bs etc and this one was not up to scratch I’m afraid .

Bobble Cottage provided a great base for our first visit to the Cotswolds, it may be small but it is perfectly formed.

It was spotlessly clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower was good & there was all that you could need in the kitchen utensils wise. The milk, cookies & ice in the freezer on our arrival were a nice touch & it was handy being able to access Netflix on the TV. We enjoyed some glorious weather during our week & enjoyed sitting out in front of the cottage to soak up some late afternoon sun. The location is super central for Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow On The Wold & all of the must see places in the Cotswolds. One thing worth highlighting with this property to help anyone booking in future is the allocated parking space, it is very narrow. We have a Ford Focus & it completely filled the space, my husband had to do some serious gymnastics to get out of the car once parked up between the other vehicles in the courtyard. You wouldn’t get a bigger vehicle in to the space- I know there is a mention of alternative parking outside the village hall but there were vehicles already parked there so not a feasible alternative. Also the cottage would benefit from a proper wheelie bin like the other properties in Bobble Court have- the small black bin by the front door was already 3/4 full when we arrived for our weeks break which left little room for our rubbish.

First of all I'd like to say the cottage was lovely in a great location right in the village everything on the doorstep!

The owner was very accommodating by letting us check in early for which we were extremely grateful. Also good that it comes with parking for a standard size car just need to be careful on entering the passage between the buildings. A couple of negatives I found were firstly the stairs. Although there is a description explaining they are steep and narrow I would go further to say if you have any kind of mobility issues this cottage is not for you! There should be more information about this and also photos showing the stairs to make this issue clearer. My partner felt very unsafe using them even though we are completely mobile we still had to take care coming down the stairs. Also on arrival there was no tea coffee sugar or milk. Very nice to leave chocolate for us but not what you want after a long 3 and half hour drive! We've stayed in many cottages and every single one offered these things apart from this one! Lastly maybe something could be done with the shower. Although we new it was just a tap shower I found it hard not to drown the bathroom when using it even sitting in the bath! Please don't take these as complaints they are just observations. We had a lovely time and it's a beautiful cottage in a beautiful place thanks for having us.

      The cottage is very nice.

The house was very clean and the equipment is quite complete. Nevertheless we believe we have a few recommendations to make it even better: • It was not clear to us how to switch on the oven. We had to contact the office. We received a quick reply, but still then it took us some time to find out how to set the timer: you have to push two buttons at the same time, not very logic. • It took us quite some time to find out how the shower works. In the end we found a switch in the sleeping room. Why not placing signs under each wall switch, also in the kitchen? • The heating in the living room does not work. The small oscillating heater did work well. • Parking lots are extremely narrow. Every day we had to deal with neighbours who had the same problem. • In the kitchen a small knife to cut tomatoes, onions, etc. is missing. • Concerning the toilet: the handle of the cistern does not work properly. You have to push it quite often before the toilet flushes. • Our final suggestion would be to include in the manual more and precise instructions how everything works. This would especially be convenient for foreign guests.
