What our customers say about their holidays

What a wonderful place to stay!

A very well equipped, comfortable cottage, with a lovely view of hills and a large pond. Everything you could ever need for a holiday base. The hot tub is a fabulous bonus, we were star gazing in that most evenings. The pool table was fun too, we had not played pool for years. There are many good books to read, sky TV, all you want if the weather is bad and you wanted to cozy up indoors. The lodge is very stylish and warm, but you also have the benefit of a wood burning stove for those chillier evenings. It is a very short drive to the shops in Castle Douglas.Threave castle and gardens is nearby. You take a boat ride to the castle, which is unique. Another great castle to visit is Caerlaverock castle, it has an unusual design. There are lovely woodland walks in Dalbeattie forest to Kippford Bay, which is a nice place to visit. There's a great pub restaurant (The Anchor Hotel) which serves fantastic food. A must do is feeding the wild goats and red deer, we took several kilos of carrots and they were gone within minutes. Hahaa Logan's fish pond is a unique place to visit, and Logan's Botanical Gardens is amazing! The Wood of Cree is another beautiful place to visit, with lots of waterfalls. Walks around Glen Trool, Kirroughtree, Clatteringshaws Loch are wonderful. Of course you can walk up the Merrick, if you are fit enough. A drive down Raiders road is good if you want a nice forest drive. Stinchar falls is another nice walk to a waterfall. There are many waterfalls to discover in the Galloway, if that is your thing. Eskrigg nature reserve is a great place for bird watching and looking out for red squirrel. There's so much to do in the Galloway, a week simply isn't long enough. We will definitely stay at Hardhills Cottage when we next return to the Galloway, I doubt you could wish for a more lovely place to stay. Thank you.

Phoenix cottage is in a great location, with great views over the river, and close to two pubs serving food. We would recommend the food and service at The Anchor, which was only 5 minutes walk away, and it was dog friendly too. We loved the upstairs open plan kitchen/dining/sitting area, with the large balcony off the lounge; great for those sundowners when its warm enough to sit out, (we were there the last week in September), and morning coffee looking out over the water. The kitchen was well equipped and well thought out. On the ground floor there are three double bedrooms, one with twin beds, and two bathrooms with good showers. We found the beds extremely soft, which some might prefer, but we're used to much firmer mattresses. There's also a small sitting area by the utility room where we used to put our walking boots on and generally gather our stuff together ready for a day out. There are three entrance/exits. Our little dog loved the garden, he had plenty of space to run around, and was quite safe. The only negative about the Phoenix cottage was that there was an unpleasant smell in the second double bedroom, (not the master bedroom). I used Febreze liberally every day to try and get rid of it, but really don't know what caused it. Apart from the bad smell downstairs, everything else was good; clean, comfortable, (if you like a very soft bed) and spacious.

Kippford Stables is in need of a good clean and some much needed maintenance. There is a strong damp musty smell in the main bedroom and a strong smell emanating from shower drain in the bathroom. This is why there seems to be lots of air fresheners on the ground floor. The kitchen ceiling has a huge crack in it and the plaster is sagging to the point that it might fall at any moment. Picture attached. Cobwebs and spiders in every corner, slugs on the walls and worktops in the kitchen! Garden tatty, the hand rails of the bridge and seating areas need painting and the decking looks dangerous. Not very inviting to sit outside. The lower garden needs the old wooden furniture and the old fence panels, that are leaning against the back of the house, removing. Couldn't see out of the main bedroom front window due to the over grown weeds and plants that are covering it. A huge smart TV but there's no wifi! Old biscuits left in the biscuit tin and although the welcome hamper looked good a lot of the stuff was out of date. Over the fifty years that we've been coming to this fantastic area this is one of the worst properties we've stayed in.

Very comfortable cottage. Only 3 of us so it seemed very, very spacious but it would be roomy even if there were 5 or 6 of you. Conservatory and large dining kitchen contributed to the feeling of space. Excellent shower. Washing machine and a washing hanger in back garden. Also an indoor collapsible hanger. Comfortable beds. Super quiet location on the farm but only a 3 minute drive to Dalbeattie. Lots of nice walking nearby. Kippford is a nice small coastal village. Dalbeattie is a nice town. Good cafe. Nice meal in the pub. The small but ''packed with stuff'' Dalbeattie museum is very interesting. Spent about 2 hours in it. What a nice area overall. Unspoilt, ''undiscovered''. Castle Douglas is a nice town and New Abbey a nice village with a very good cafe. Sadly Dalbeattie FC were not playing at home during our stay. I would have gone. Did go to Queen of the South vs. Alloa Athletic on the day of our arrival. A ''seven goal thriller''.

Phoenix cottage was everything and more. Having visited these parts for over 50 years I know that it is situated in the perfect spot in a beautiful area. The cottage living quarters are upstairs with a lovely safe balcony giving you constant fantastic views with some spectacular sun sets. We have stayed in other cottages and this is Scotland so you are not guaranteed sunshine, but on the bad days the indoor living space gives you plenty to occupy your relaxing time. This cottage has all your home comforts. It is clean fresh and has good car parking. As per a previous review we had no issues at all with any noise or building work. We all had a very relaxed and wonderful stay can’t wait to return. From the booking to leaving everything was made simple.. Thank you Phoenix Cottage.
