Holiday Cottages in the Forest Of Dean

Ancient woodland, fascinating historic landmarks, and a scattering of picturesque towns and villages make the Forest of Dean an unforgettable place to visit. Located in the heart of Gloucestershire, much of the Forest of Dean remains unspoilt and remarkably free of the usual tourist crowds. So if you really want to get a sense of what England was like, say, a few hundred years ago when much of England really was just fields and woodland, consider a stay in one of the excellent Forest of Dean holiday cottages on offer.

Choose Holiday cottages in the Forest of Dean for the very best self-catered accommodation. This rural and pristine woodland isn’t somewhere you’re going to find chain hotels, and so Forest of Dean holiday cottages are one of the best ways to enjoy this historic part of the country. There are lots of great reasons to make your Forest of Dean adventure a cottage holiday, and there are options for all tastes and requirements, whether you’re after spacious, pet friendly accommodation or a historic property with bags of charm and character.

What to do on your Forest of Dean cottage holiday

The Forest of Dean has some of the best woodlands in the world and is often used as a location for films. It was also (allegedly) an inspiration for Tolkien’s Middle Earth and you’ll definitely feel as though you’ve stepped onto the pages of a fantasy novel as you wander past twisted boughs and meander along the winding pathways. Puzzlewood, in particular, is a great place to visit with the kids, where you’ll find lots of mazes, farm animals, and picnic areas.

are a great choice for history lovers, and what Britain may lack in climate it certainly more than makes up for with amazing historic landmarks. The Forest of Dean was actually a royal hunting ground even before 1066, and was also a favoured haunt for the Tudors. There are still traces of this long and prestigious history all over the place, including Tudor and Jacobean manor houses, and castles at Berkeley and Chepstow.

Make your next holiday truly special and choose from some amazing Forest of Dean holiday Cottages, whether you’re looking for something small and cosy or something large and spacious for you and your friends, you’re bound to find exactly what you’re looking for.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sally - Verified booking

We absolutely loved our stay in The Annexe.

Came for 4 nights with just me, 2 teenagers and the dog in a fairly rainy week, so was slightly nervous about keeping them all entertained and happy - but needn't have worried! The house was immaculately clean (and I mean, totally, utterly, spotless clean) and we couldn't have asked for better, more modern and comfortable facilities (my first time cooking on an induction hob - worked a treat!!). The lovely owners even provided us with a home-baked cake and cookies - they didn't last long with the teenagers in the house! Wi-Fi had a super strong signal, so we were able to stream movies, play games on our devices etc with no problems (essential with 2 teenagers in tow!). Plenty of piping hot water for showers or a bath, too. The beautiful but also wildlife-friendly garden and views from The Annexe were magnificent - I had a real stinker of a cold on our holiday, so spent a lot of time happily sat in the reclining lounge chairs reading and watching the birds coming to the feeders out the window. The location was perfect for a big range of activities too - we went to Go Ape, Goodrich Castle, Symonds Yat and the Taurus Crafts shops & cafe, but saw many other places we would've loved to explore if we'd had a longer stay. All were dog-friendly and lovely places to go (essential as my dog has separation anxiety so has to come everywhere with me). We loved our break in The Annexe and couldn't recommend it more highly as a place to stay.

Lynton House is spacious, modern, and well maintained.

We were a family of 8, mostly adults, and we felt the house was spacious and comfortable with plenty room to spare. There are two lounges, an eat in kitchen and a separate dining room. There is a separate utility room. One of the bedrooms is en-suite. There is a main garden and patio area to the front of the house, and two smaller gardens to the side an rear. In addition to the TV, the house is well stocked with games and books. A 5 minute walk from the house there is a nice playground for children, and a football pitch open to the public, which was an added bonus. The house is on the edge of Ruardean Hill; we did not hear a sound from any of the neighbours - it was so peaceful and tranquil. The entrance to the house faces open space and this adds to the privacy of the house. The house is located within the Forest of Dean, and there are many walks that can be done from the house, or with a short drive. Elaine is a wonderful host, and we would happily recommend Lynton House to future guests.

Rose Cottage and our host were lovely.

The cottage was comfortable and the location is very good for exploring the Forest of Dean and surrounding area. The water pressure is not good upstairs if someone else is using the shower downstairs, but that was just a minor detail. Being right on the main road to Lydney would not have been my first choice but wasn't too much of an issue as the off street parking was good. There was no noise from the workshop opposite and having the sign outside made the cottage easy to find. The only issue I had whilst booking was with Sykes cottages and the very rude person we first spoke to who cancelled our original booking without consulting us even though we asked her not to and we were then left to find an alternative, which she also got wrong. Fortunately the second person we spoke to was nice and competent and sorted out the error. It does not make me want to use Sykes ever again, even though the holiday was eventually relaxing the stress beforehand was not what we needed.

Our visit to the beautiful Rose Cottage was nothing short of charming.

We loved the place and the people. From the well thought out kitchen, with everything you could want equipped, to the wood burning stove in the super comfortable living/dining room with modern TV and Netflix, comfortable bed, storage space for clothes, the relaxing conservatory, the well kept garden and more.... the attention to detail here is noticeable in providing as much as possible for the guests. There is so much to love about this great place to stay. It is as much a joy as Christine our host, who was very friendly and welcoming to us and a credit to providing a place we wouldn't hesitate in returning to! The private parking area is brilliant for offloading luggage and is safely out of the road. Fast broadband too which was a bonus. With beautiful surroundings, peaceful walks just minutes away and easy routes to surrounding areas, Rose Cottage comes with the highest recommendation from us. Thanks from Jill & Bob

We have just spent a wonderful week with our 2 shihtzu dogs so the secure garden was great to let them out in the morning and evening.

We spent everyday travelling around to different areas Tewksbury,Gloucester cathedral (town is not very nice),Ross on wye, symonds yak,Bourton on water,Soudley ponds and many more We ate at The Penny Farthing which was really nice home cooked food (not open all day for food) We ate 4 times at the White Hart which seems extreme but the food was so nice and we seem to have breakfast and eat early 4-6pm and spend the evenings chilled around the fire watching tv. I gave 4 stars because the place could do with a deep clean/freshen up,sofa cleaned (we took throws) The front needs tidying up (first impressions) the front step and patio needs a jetwash as it was very slippery! Steve is such a lovely man and kept us well stocked with logs and there for you if you need anything and you feel very safe and secure there We can understand why the guest book showed many repeat bookings
